Obituary
It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our family patriarch William (Bill) Sanderson Pryce II after a brief illness. Dad peacefully departed December 15, 2021 surrounded by his loved ones, to join his beloved wife Doreen just 12 days shy of his 91st birthday.
Dad was born in Dundee Scotland on Dec 27, 1930 to William Sanderson I and Agnes Pryce (nee Thomson) and was the eldest of the 3 sons. He grew up through the sacrifices of World War II.
Following his grade school years, Dad began schooling to become an Auto Mechanic. Following the completion of this training, he was conscripted (at 21 yrs) into the Royal Air Force February 4, 1952. He served the compulsory two years at R.A.F Station Waterbeach, England leaving the Air Force February 27, 1954 as a Corporal with an excellent service record.
He returned to Dundee working in Auto repair shops until he immigrated to Canada. November 1, 1957 at 26 yrs he boarded the passenger liner The Empress of Britain out of Liverpool England and sailed to Montreal Quebec where he then boarded a train to Winnipeg Manitoba to stay with relatives Bill & Lillis Taylor and his brother Ian. He quickly adapted to working & living in Winnipeg and made many wonderful lifelong friends.
The local Winnipeg hangout spot was a diner where he met his beloved Doreen. They married in May 1960 and stayed in Winnipeg for the next 7 yrs working and expanding the family.
In the summer of 1967 the family moved to Kelowna, briefly living in the Mission on Capozzi rd then downtown on Lawson ave. Mom first worked at the Eaton’s store on Bernard Ave then worked for BC Tel on St Paul Street and Dad started working as a mechanic/machinist at Pandosy Machine Shop.
In 1971 he and Mom bought 4 acres in North Glenmore. He worked as a mechanic during the day and took night school classes learning how to build a house. And, he did build the family home and provided us with a wonderful, rural, happy upbringing with dogs, cats, horses, chickens, dirt bikes, skidoos and weekend shinny hockey games with the neighbours at the nearby pond and many camping trips.
In the mid 70’s Dad started P & P Import Auto repair shop with Fred Paine for several years. Afterwards he worked at Castle Nissan, Carter Honda then retired from Don Folk in 1984. We know he continued to enjoy making his rounds to visit his friends in the auto and machine shop industries around town.
When Mom retired from BC Tel in 1996 they enjoyed winters in Yuma Arizona, trips to Europe and Maui and many cruises to different parts of the world.
When Mom passed in 2006, Dad continued to live independently for many years. He really enjoyed his weekly outings for Pub Steak Sandwiches and Fish & Chip meals followed by several games of pool which he usually won!
Dad had a great sense of humour and enjoyed forwarding on jokes via email to friends and family.
Dad is predeceased by his loving wife Doreen, his brothers Ian (New York) and Graham (Dundee), his nephew Bill (Dundee), his brothers-in-law Mike Davidchuk and Milton Olineck and many long time friends abroad and across Canada.
He is survived by his sons Terry (Barb), Bill (Carmen), daughter Kim, grandkids Ken, Lisa, Matthew and Emily plus sisters-in-law, nieces and nephews across Canada.
The family would like to thank Dr Williams, the Nurses and Support Staff at the Kelowna Hospice House for the wonderful attentive care he received. Special thank you to Palliative nurse Kim for your assistance and kindness to Dad.
Dad requested no service. The family will have a private interment at the Kelowna Memorial Park in the spring.
In lieu of flowers, we would ask for donations to be made in his name to The Salvation Army and/or The Central Okanagan Hospice House. These were his wishes. Thank you.
