William (Bill) Edward Harvie, of Grandview Manitoba, passed away on Sunday October 3rd at the age of 81.
Born August 31st 1940 in Windsor Nova Scotia to parents Philip Harvie and Edna Sweet. Bill was the oldest of six children and a brother to; Elsie, Marjorie, Nancy, Susan and Kathy.
Growing up in Middleton Nova Scotia, Bill or Billy grew up loving the outdoors and helping on the family farm. At the age of 17, with his mother’s consent, he enlisted into the Canadian Army with dreams of becoming a pilot. Those dreams fell short after as Bill was colour blind. This however did not stop him as he continued to serve during Peace Time from 1958-1961 as Private Harvie.
Following discharge from the Army in 1961, Bill met his first wife Joyce Kiistner in Calgary, Alberta. They wed soon after in June of the same year. They welcomed their first son Philip in 1962 and shortly after their daughter Kim in 1964.
In pursuit of a new career Bill accepted a job with the Great Canadian Old Sands Ltd. (later Suncor) in 1966. The family were able to soon call Fort McMurray home as Bill started his 33 year career with the company, eventually retiring from the position of Oil Refinery Operations Supervisor.
Bill dedicated much of his time as a Captain in the Army Cadet Corps. This became a family passion as his children followed their extensive involvement in the program alongside their father. During this time he also served as a member of the Canadian Army Reserves from 1975-1988.
Bill was a loyal member of the Royal Canadian Legion. As a lifetime member he took pride in his involvement and was an active member in each of the communities he lived in. Following the death of his wife Joyce in 1997. Bill found companionship in a long time legion friend Marion Jiggins. Quickly becoming Bill’s greatest love, they wed in 1998.
Following retirement they moved to Burstall Saskatchewan and settled into “the good life”. They spent the majority of their time with family and enjoyed traveling across Canada in their motorhome. With the unfortunate passing of his wife Marion in 2004 Bill then moved to Grandview Manitoba to be closer with his daughter and family.
Bill loved life. He was a man of great faith and devoted his time to his lord. He made friends wherever he went and always took time to connect to those important to him. One of his greatest enjoyments in life was watching his family grow and spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Bill is predeceased by his parents, sisters; Elsie & Marjorie and wives; Joyce & Marion.
He is survived by son Philip (Paula) Harvie of Fort McMurray, AB, daughter Kim Harvie of Grandview, MB, grandchildren; Jesse (Jen), Sydney (Dillan), Alivia, Leah, Andria (Cristian), great-grandchildren; Aden, Cason, Kaylie and Milla. Sisters; Nancy, Susan (Allen), Kathy, Numerous Nieces, Nephews, Cousins and Dear Friends.
