Following a year long battle with heart disease, Bill died peacefully in his 92nd year in Duncan, BC. Bill lived life to its fullest and was fiercely independent, even in his final months while his health was failing. Predeceased by his two brothers – George and Jimmy, and survived by his nieces and nephews – Janis (Gary), Jill ( Dennis) , Jay ( Megan) , Jamie, and Jon ( Paula) and their families.
Bill was born, raised and worked in Toronto in the investment industry. He was an avid tennis player and a member of the Toronto Lawn Tennis Club where he developed life-long friendships. He learned to play bridge there as well, which became a cornerstone of his path in life. Bill was also a keen outdoorsman. Skiing, hiking, cycling were his passions which led him to Vancouver in 1980. He joined Jericho Tennis Club, met new friends, and immersed himself in the BC lifestyle. He retired as a stockbroker in 2000 and moved full time to his home in Arbutus Ridge on Vancouver Island. His friends there became his family. He learned to play golf, loved gardening but is best remembered for hosting regular dinner parties in the “Ridge” and bringing people together. In 2016, he moved to Ladysmith where he actively played pickle ball, playing 3 – 4 times /week, against much younger folks!
Bill maintained his wit and keen sense of humour to the end. Many thanks to the wonderful staff at Hamlets at Duncan – their care was exceptional with a special mention to Sierra Cook. The family would also like to thank his friend and bridge partner, Shirley Charters, who was there for him in his final months.
There will be a private memorial at a later date.
Our most sincere sympathies to the family and friends of William Bentley March 1 1930
