Wayne Harrison King – age 81 of Strawberry Plains passed away peacefully on Thursday morning, August 5, 2021, surrounded by his loving family. He was the seventh of thirteen children was born and raised in the “Holler” and have always lived in Tuckahoe. Wayne was a well-known carpenter there and in the surrounding area. Wayne enjoyed playing softball on Midway and Tuckahoe teams. He coached girls’ softball which nearly broke us in buying milkshakes from Cardin’s for his winning team. He enjoyed raising livestock, gamecock fowl, farming, and mowing. Wayne was known for smiling and waving at passersby, but most of all, he loved being with grandson, Cody, family, and friends that stopped by. Wayne’s saying was, “If you can’t help someone, there’s no need being alive.”
Preceded in death by parents, Albert (Cooley) King and Lula French King; brothers, Albert Jr., James Oliver, Bruce, Earnest Chandler; sisters, Jessie Brooks, Barbara “Bobbie” Jones, and Mary Jones; and special uncle, Frank King.
Survived by loving wife of 58 years, Barbara Merritt King; daughters, Toni (Kyle) Smith, Lisa (Mike) Hickey; best grandson ever, Cody Smith; and furbaby, “Little Bit”; brothers Allen (Dee), Roland (Jackie), and Stanley (JoAnn); sister-in-law, Martie King; loving sisters, Betty Hawks, Nancy Merritt, and Sharon Merritt Millis. The family will receive friends 5:00-7:00 PM Sunday, August 8, 2021, at Bridges Funeral Home. Family and friends will meet 10:45 AM at Thorngrove Cemetery for an 11:00 AM graveside service with Pastor Buddy Garland officiating.
