Walter Boyko 2021

Walter’s Obituary
It is with heavy hearts that the family of Walter Boyko announce his passing at the Kelvington Hospital on September 3, 2021, at the age of 90.
Walter was born on a homestead near Hazel Dell, SK, to Michael and Mary (Cherwak) Boyko. In 1937, the Boyko family moved to Norquay, SK, where Walter attended school at Grand Ravine. After completing his grade nine education, it was time to start his career farming alongside his parents. In 1949, Walter and his brother, Pete, purchased a quarter of land next to the family homestead. Walter was a mixed farmer from then until 1966.
There was a transition in Walter’s life between 1966 and 1981, when he worked away from the farm during the winter months. He became a diamond driller and spent every winter working for Griffith Brothers Diamond Drilling. Walter was so well regarded that he oversaw multiple drilling crews, exploring for Uranium north of La Ronge, SK. In 1981, he began to strictly engage in grain farming. He was so excited, as he now had free time to devote to his church and the Wheat Pool. In 1997, he started a new chapter in his life by selling the farm and moving to the big metropolis of Canora, SK.
He loved his life in Canora, loved his church, enjoyed helping at the Ukrainian Heritage Museum and was proud to be involved with the Ukrainian Canadian Congress – Canora Branch. Walter’s passion was helping. He was well known for his love of gardening and always shared his bounty with friends and family. He did the same with his woodworking. He relaxed by going fishing and travelling the world, taking trips to many exotic locations.
Walter was predeceased by his parents, Michael and Mary; five brothers: Jack, Nick, Phillip, John, and Pete; and three sisters: Ella, Alice, and Jean. He was the last of a generation of brothers and sisters who homesteaded and broke the land on the prairies.
Walter never had children of his own but had a hand in raising most of his nieces and nephews. They all loved to visit him, and Walter, Lord willing, never missed a family reunion, wedding, graduation, or any other family function. He was Godfather to many and loved by all. He will be missed. Walter made everyone he talked to feel like they were the most important person in his life. He always had a joke, a smile, and words of encouragement. Memory Eternal Вічная Пам’ять
