SYKES, VIDA M.
In loving memory of Vida May Sykes (nee Kramp), who passed away peacefully on March 28th, 2021. Beloved wife for 67 years of John Sykes (predeceased 2015). Loving mother of Robert Sykes (Connie), Patricia Grace, Susanne Polley (David), and Jennifer Garrett. Cherished grandmother of Lenea, Kate, Pamela, Sarah, Meagan, Andrew, Scott, Lauren, and Craig. Great-grandmother of eleven.
Born in New Liskeard, Vi grew up in northern Ontario. As family lore has it, she exaggerated her age in order to join the Royal Canadian Air Force during World War II. As one of the “Chute Girls,” Vi played a crucial role in preparing parachutes for the troops. In Timmins, she met the love of her life, John, at a bowling alley. They married in 1947 and moved to Sudbury to start their real estate and insurance businesses.
Vi became a successful businesswoman, instrumental in managing the operations of Sykes Insurance. She was active in her community, serving as a Red Cross chairperson and a school board trustee. An avid golfer and curler, Vi was a longtime member of the Idylwylde Golf & Country Club. She was a proud recipient of an eight-ender pin, a rare accomplishment in the sport of curling. Vi loved gardening, and family and friends will always remember the scale and beauty of her impressive flower gardens.
After raising their children, Vi and John began wintering in Florida in the 1970s, and for many decades enjoyed golfing and socializing with close friends in Pompano Beach.
Vi spent many wonderful years at her Long Lake residence with John. Every summer, they were surrounded by their nine grandchildren, who travelled from all over the world to be together at the lake.
Vi’s strength of character was notable and served her well. She came from meager beginnings and truly built her life with intention. Throughout her life, Vi remained sharp and savvy, well read, and up to date on current events. If you found yourself at her kitchen table, she’d be sure to share the latest news over a slice of her favourite Golden Grain dark rye bread. In many ways, Vi was ahead of her time – an independent woman with strong convictions, tenacity, and heart. Some words come to mind: gutsy, articulate, stylish, pragmatic, and deeply caring. As the matriarch of the family, she was supportive and involved. Her profound and lasting impact on her family cannot be overstated.
In memory of Vi and her love of gardening, please plant something beautiful in your own garden to enjoy for years to come. Arrangements entrusted to Sudbury Park Lawn Crematorium.
