Verna Hayward
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of
Verna Hayward on December 19th, 2021 at the Dr.
Everett Chalmers Hospital.
She is survived by her daughter Susan and granddaughter
Beatrice. Verna was a wonderful mother and role model.
A lifelong learner, Verna fostered the music education of
many from the time of her teaching beginnings at just seventeen. She
loved performing and entertaining. Her lively presence will be missed
by her choirs and the students she enjoyed so much.
At her request, there will be no memorial service. The family
asks that you remember her warmly with a song. Let the music last a
lifetime.

I am so very sorry for your loss, Susan! I think of Verna often. She was always smiling. She was such a warm friendly talented person!

Dear Susan and Beatrice,
My condolences to you both on the death of your dear mother and grandmother. I will miss her lively presence as our choir director with the Capital City Singers (formerly Stepping Stone). I was looking forward to the day when our choir would resume.
We met for an outdoor sing-song on August 12 which was quickly moved indoors when it began to rain buckets. That was the last time I saw Verna. She looked well and in form and so happy to see us as we did her.
The musical world will look different without Verna in it. She had such a style for getting the message across. I can see her raise that one eyebrow. At one rehearsal, this one I will never forget, which I am careful to use properly in my every day speech; “I don’t want to hear any more ‘chews’ she said. An example – “about you”, not “about chew”. It was difficult for a few of us to break that habit. I hear it misused so often in songs to this day.
She put her all into her directing and beyond, a lovely legacy for both of you. Great memories. My love and best wishes to you both and to all my fellow singers.
