1926 – 2021
It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Dorothy Margaret Marshall (Fowler) on August 15, 2021 at David Lloyd Jones. She is predeceased by her loving husband Fredrick Lewis Marshall (January 14, 2009), parents Peggy and Arthur Fowler and brother Raymond Fowler. She leaves behind her children David (Wanda), Alan (Donalda), Sheila, Wendy (Jim) Andrews. She was a kind and proud grandmother to Brandon, Carling, Tyler, Cameron, Dorothy, Belle and Emily and a great-grandmother to Isabel and Hallie.
Mom was born in Vancouver and moved to Kelowna to attend Central Elementary and Kelowna High School. Her childhood was spent swimming at the Aquatic Centre at City Park, biking (even as far as Winfield!), tobogganing at Kelowna Golf Course, piano, reading, fishing with her father, hiking and involvement in CGIT. As a teenager she worked part-time, sewed her own clothes, modelled, taught Sunday School and attended many dances. As the top student she was chosen to be the Valedictorian of the 1944 graduating class. After grade 13 she attended Normal School – Teachers College, followed by 4 years of teaching in Kelowna. In the summer she pursued her Home Economics Degree at the University of Victoria, graduating first class in 1949. Summers were also spent travelling to the US with friends and colleagues.
Mom first met Dad in Grandpa and Grandma Marshall’s apple orchard as a teenager. During the war years, top students were allowed to skip school in the fall to pick fruit. After Dad returned from university they married in 1951. Mom and Dad were a true partnership. All decisions were made jointly, but Mom definitely took the lead at home. She created a home full of rituals and traditions with a consistent tone of encouragement, acceptance, thirst for knowledge, stories, laughter and music. Mom was involved in the United Church “Bankhead Unit”, The Retired Teachers Club, Canadian Club and University Women’s Club. Mom enjoyed travel but always said Kelowna was the best place in the world. Home continued to be a place we would drop in frequently for all of our lives. When asked to give life advice to her grandchildren, she unhesitatingly said, “Enjoy Life”.
Mom was a beautiful, classy and elegant lady. However, what really shone was her personality. Mom had an easy laugh, was mischievous and was charming to everyone she met. A kind, compassionate, generous, unselfish spirit who treasured her children, grandchildren and extended family and friends. Friends would describe her as intellectual, friendly and hard-working. Grandchildren fondly remember swimming with their cousins at Mom and Dad’s indoor pool with lots of stories and laughter, followed by tea and angel food cake.
Mom exuded her values daily in both words and deeds: compassion, eternal optimism, joy, insight and wisdom. We are extremely grateful to the dedicated and thoughtful staff at David Lloyd Jones. Special appreciation to Dr. Penny and Dr. Carlyle for their empathy and excellent care of Mom. Many thanks to Soledad Reyes for her special caregiving and companionship.
In memory of our mother, donations can be made to the United Church Memorial Fund or the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation.
Goodbye Mom.
We miss your love and laughter.
