Obituary of Tom Murray
MURRAY: Thomas “Tom” Ballantyne –
A resident of Chatham, Tom Murray passed away at the Chatham-Kent Hospice with family at his side on Saturday, January 30, 2021 at the age of 77.
Born in Cumnock, Ayrshire, Scotland, Tom was the son of the late Fulton and Lilias (Ballantyne) Murray.
Beloved husband of 55 years to Doreen Murray (nee Copeland).
Cherished father of Scott Murray (Christine).
Proud Granddad to Sarah Margaret Murray and Claire Lilias Murray.
Dear brother to Margie Clark (Roger).
Uncle to Dawn Watters (Robert), Stephen Clark (Anne) and great-uncle to Aaron Watters and Gemma Clark.
Dearly missed by his wee dog, Paxton.
Tom and Doreen emigrated with their son Scott to Canada in 1972, moving from New Glasgow, Nova Scotia to Chatham, Ontario in 1973. There, he began his career with Canadian Fram. He started as an electrician and worked his way through the ranks to the position of Plant Manager.
His passion was his work and his granddaughters. At the beginning of his retirement, Tom and Doreen made many trips back to Scotland and to Ottawa to see his family. His newfound hobby was reading Scottish crime novels, especially novels by Ian Rankin (Rebus).
Tom’s other passion was following Premier League Football (Liverpool FC). He was doer as opposed to a talker and his favourite expression was “Just Do It – Nike”.
Due to Covid-19 restrictions, cremation has taken place and a celebration of life will be held at a later date.
Special thanks to the staff at the Chatham-Kent Health Alliance -4th Floor ‘Medical A’ for their care and to the Chatham-Kent Hospice who went above and beyond for Tom and his family during his last days.
