Thomas Patrick (Tommy) Woodfine
Sydney Mines
It is with immense sadness we announce the passing of our beloved father, grandfather, uncle, brother and friend, Tommy Woodfine, age 88, on Friday, March 5, 2021 at the Northside Community Guest Home.
Born in North Sydney on September 24th, 1932, Tommy was the son of the late Thomas and Jane (O’Flaherty) Woodfine.
Tommy worked at MacMillan’s Lumber then Don Ray Lumber for a number of years. Tommy loved to fish, hunt, bowl and work on vehicles. Tommy enjoyed all sports but especially hockey and baseball. He was honoured to be inducted in the Hockey and Baseball Hall of Fame for Cape Breton for both his playing and coaching skills. Tommy was a lifelong member of the Sydney Mines Pensioners Club and enjoyed going for all the delicious treats and music.
One of Tommy’s greatest pleasures was watching hockey no matter if it was his grandchildren’s games, the Cape Breton Screaming Eagles with his sons & grandchildren or the Maple Leafs on TV. It all made him smile, especially if he could buy rink fries with gravy.
Tommy enjoyed all snacks and treats and could always eat whatever was placed in front of him…unless of course it was a vegetable.
Tommy loved to laugh and listen to music. However, his love for his family was what he cherished above all else. Tommy battled dementia for the last few years but he always knew his family and smiled right up to his last days. Tommy recognized every familiar face he saw. He knew they were connected to his life somehow and admired their friendships. His love for music and songs never ended and his determination to dance, tap his feet and sing was forever in him.
Tommy leaves behind one sister; Annie Mae, as well as his children; Mary (Paul), Wilfred (Debbie), Sheldon (Lana), Paul (Letha); nine grandchildren, Brian (Megan), Ashley, Catherine (Adam) Robert (Kailey), Justin (Morgaine), Spencer, Rebecca, Alyssa, and Michael, six great-grandchildren, Mya, Alexa, Landen, Ayla, Savannah (step) and Joshua, as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
Besides his parents, Tommy was predeceased by his wife of more than 61 years, Lorraine (MacIntyre) Woodfine, his beloved son Brian Woodfine and siblings Gus, William, Josie, Sis, and Nel.
The family would like to thank the Northside Community Guest Home for their care and support over the last 18 months, and especially during his final days.
The Celebration of Life will take place on Wednesday, March 10, 2021, at 1 pm in Holy Family Church, Sydney Mines with Fr. Fabian Ihunegbo officiating. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to a charity of your choice. Words of comfort may be forwarded to his family at www.jmjobesfuneralhome.com
