Thomas M. Shinners
North Sydney
It is with sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of Tom Shinners, age 80, beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother and friend, on Friday, April 9, 2021, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, surrounded by his loving family.
Born in Dartmouth, he was the son of the late Fred and Beatrice “Bobs” (Welsh) Shinners.
Tom worked as a stevedore with Marine Atlantic in North Sydney, retiring in 1996, after 35 years of service.
He was a member of St. Joseph Church in North Sydney, a third-degree member of the Knights of Columbus Council 5109, North Sydney and was an active volunteer within his community.
Tom was a quiet and gentle man who enjoyed spending time with his family. He was a familiar face at all the horse shows around the Maritimes over the years and looked forward to the summers spent camping in PEI.
Tom’s favourite hobby was photography. He had a keen interest in the history of his home town and he was well known for his large collection of old photographs of North Sydney and surrounding areas.
Tom is survived by his wife Sandra (Burt) Shinners, by his daughter Tracy (Trevor) Carnelley, Carman, Manitoba; his two precious grandchildren, Nicholas and Griffin, by three sisters, Anita (Don) LeBlanc, Jane (Pat) Warren), both of Bedford, NS; Marlyn Shinners (Joe Comeau), North Sydney; three brothers, Wayne “Toddy”(Zoe) Shinners, Bedford; Gary Shinners, Sackville, NS, Paul Shinners, Calgary; three sisters-in-law, Shirley (Vic) Jenkins, Ball’s Creek; Charlene (Shaun) Clarke, Georges River; Karen Wiesner (Ernie), Georges River; brother-in-law, Brad Burt (Sandra MacDougall), North Sydney, and several nieces and nephews.
Besides his parents, Tom was predeceased by a brother and sister in infancy, sister-in-law Carol and brother-in-law Tom Burt.
There will be no visitation by request. A private family funeral mass will be held at a later date at St. Joseph Church, North Sydney, with Rev. Doug MacDonald officiating. Burial will take place in Lakeside Cemetery, North Sydney.
In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to Hospice/Palliative Care of Cape Breton.
