Steven Chwyl
CHWYL, Steven
November 7, 1942 – September 6, 2021
After a life fully lived, following a brief illness, Steven Chwyl of Edmonton passed away two months before his 79th birthday. Steven was heartbroken with the passing of his wife of 53 years, Patricia in 2018. Mourning his loss are daughters, Lisa (David) Bergt, Heidi (Terry) Paranych, and Shelley (Jan) Kofluk; his 6 grandchildren who will miss him dearly; Cameron, Rebecca, Matt, Abby, Sawyer and Kennedy.
He is further survived by his brother, Donald (Louise) Chwyl; and sister, Sandra Lafleche; sister-in-law, Doreen (Victor) Buga, brother-in-law, Peter (Ollie) Bilecki, companion, Eleanor; and many dear family and friends.
Steven is predeceased by parents, Katherine (Panas) and Stephen Chwyl; and in-laws, Julian and Annie Bilecki.
Born into humble beginnings of Ukrainian immigrants, Steve came into the world at the Radway Hospital on November 7, 1942. He spent the first few years of his life on a farm near Waskatenau. Around the age of five, his family moved to Edmonton. Steve was a member of the first graduating class at Bonnie Doon High School.
He proudly attended the University of Alberta, completing his Bachelor of Education. Over his 35 year teaching career with the Edmonton Public School Board, he taught Science, Math and Industrial Arts at Balwin, Dickensfield and Steel Heights Junior High.
Steven met his soulmate, Patricia Bilecki and married in 1965. Together they farmed a quarter section of land in the Legal area. He was a dedicated family man, very proud of the accomplishments of his daughters and later, was a regular spectator at all of the activities of his grandchildren.
A multi-talented problem solver, he could figure out how to fix anything, and did so with great pride and workmanship. He was particularly skilled at carpentry and fine woodworking.
He lived an active life enjoying camping, golfing, downhill skiing, basketball, curling, gardening, attending live theater, and travelling to many corners of the world.
Steve continued his robust life right until the time of his illness. He maintained a beautiful yard, garden and home. He golfed several times weekly with his regular golf buddies. He loved cooking, canning, pickling which he continued to do only weeks ago.
His sudden illness was due to a Staphylococcus aureus bacterial blood infection, that caused septic arthritis which he battled but could not overcome.
The family wishes to acknowledge and thank the compassionate doctors and nurses at the University Hospital for their urgent and intense efforts to save Steven’s life.
Divine Liturgy on Friday, September 10, 2021 at 9:30 a.m. at the Exaltation of the Holy Cross Ukrainian Catholic Church, 9003 153 Avenue, with Interment St. Michael’s Cemetery.
