STEIN, Stanley Bernard
May 24, 1944 – August 20, 2021
Stan Stein passed away on August 20, 2021 with his wife and children by his side. He is survived by his wife Marlene, daughter Laura and son-in-law Emmanuel, son Richard and daughter-in-law Adrienne, sister Joanne and brother-in-law Garry, and his adoring grandchildren Lilah, Nora and Nathaniel.
Stanley was known to his friends and family by many names: Stan, SB, Dad, and most importantly, Grampy. Each of those names reflected a different part of his life and personality.
Born in Toronto to Nathan and Clara Stein, Stan studied at the University of Toronto and Yale before becoming a lawyer. He worked tirelessly during his years at Weir & Folds and Osler, Hoskin & Harcourt, becoming one of the top and most respected lawyers in his field. He took pride in his work, and like all things, executed his trade with integrity, commitment, and honour. SB had a dry wit and poignant sense of humour. Although not much for small talk, he loved a good joke and a stimulating conversation.
Stan met Marlene in 1965, married in 1968, and together they spent 53 years watching their family grow. As Dad, he taught his children to love nature and the outdoors, spending summers at the cottage. Canoeing, windsurfing and boat rides for ice cream were his favourite summer activities. In the winter, he loved nothing more than to hit the slopes and taught his kids to share his love of skiing. In 2008 Stan became Grampy. He was a devoted grandfather and revelled in every accomplishment of his three grandchildren. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him.
