Obituary
Dustin; Stanley “Stan” M.
Passed away at home in Coldwater, on Saturday March 20, 2021, in his 90th year. Stan Dustin, beloved husband of Catherine “Kitty” (nee Robertson) of Coldwater, formerly of St. Joseph Island. Loving father of Keith (Heather) Dustin of Ottawa, Sandra Dustin (Mike Smith) of Coldwater and Wayne (Erica) Dustin of Ottawa; and much loved “Grandpa Stan” to his 4 granddaughters Meaghan, Sarah, Kaitlin & Chloe Dustin. Dear brother of Richard (predeceased), Barbara, Glen (predeceased), Dale (predeceased), Norman (predeceased), Marty, Shayne and John. Stan is survived by his many nieces, nephews and their families on both the Dustin and Robertson sides of the family.
After finishing high school in Franklin, NH, Stan joined the US Army and served in the 89th Airborne as a paratrooper. While there, he played baseball in the inter-base league where his pitching even caught the eye of the scouts for the St. Louis Cardinals. After serving four years in the military, he attended Tilton Prep School then received a degree at University of New Hampshire before moving into the master’s program in fisheries biology at University of Michigan. In 1960 he began his 31 year career with Department of Fisheries and Oceans which brought him to Sea Lamprey Control in Sault Ste. Marie.
Keith and Wayne were both elite cross-country skiers, so it was natural for Stan to use his leadership skills to be a member of the National Ski Team Committee. Stan and the entire family were heavily involved in the Soo Finnish Ski Club for many years. When he retired in 1991, he and Catherine managed Stokely Creek XC Ski Lodge for 3 winters. They then retired to St. Joseph Island. This was a perfect choice as Stan was an avid outdoorsman with a passion for both hunting and fishing. He volunteered on committees at Grace United Church and Angler’s and Hunter’s, he also helped to develop ski trails for the Jocelyn Recreation Area.
Stan was a people person and loved to engage anyone in conversation. He made many friends over the years. He loved watching sports, both live and on television. He played baseball, broomball, darts, lacrosse, curling as well as cross country skiing and running. He was also a baseball coach and umpire.
Stan enjoyed his last few years living near Coldwater. He and Catherine recently celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary in February 2021.
Arrangements entrusted to the Mundell Funeral Home, 79 West St., N., Orillia. Cremation has taken place. A Celebration of Stan’s Life will take place at a later date. If desired, memorial donations to the Alzheimer’s Society or the Charity of Ones Choice would be appreciated. Messages of condolence are welcomed at www.mundellfuneralhome.com
