Shirley is survived by her husband Bill Thompson; her sons: Troy Skog (wife Micheal Vonn), Corwin Skog (wife Jasmin Angelica Skog), and Brendon Thompson; brothers, Edgar Yantz and Tom Gary; the jewels in her life were her grandchildren: Jordyn Thompson and Jesse Thompson (mother Angela Grohn), Kalla Thompson (mother Krista Sandney); her grandchildren in the Philippines: Lucas Alexander Skog, Jacob Skog and Hadassah Skog.
Shirley was raised in Tompkins, Saskatchewan by her adopted parents, Alexander and Beth Leas. She grew up as a farm girl and attended school in Tompkins until she married her first husband, Leonard Skog, at the age of 17. They moved to Swift Current and raised three boys: Jordon, Troy and Corwin.
Leonard met his untimely death in a car accident, and Shirley, now at the age of 27, raised and supported her three boys on her own.
In 1972 she met Bill Thompson and re-married in 1973. She then gave birth to another son, Brendon, and found herself complete with her four boys. In 1979 the whole family moved to Weyburn, which they all now called home.
Shirley worked at the Special Care Home for 30 years, where she applied her great love of helping others. Even after retirement, she could be found at the Care Home to visit and help the many friends that she had acquired over the years.
Anyone that knew Shirley, knew her as the woman who never stopped caring for others. Her contagious laughter was unforgettable, and her smile could permeate the coldest heart and make one feel loved.
Shirley’s superpower was birthed from her faith. From the tragedies and hardships in her life, she met her saviour, Jesus Christ, and turned her pains and sorrows onto Him. She lived in His grace and truly become a light on a hill, shining His love and compassion to others. Shirley’s love touched many.
Shirley loved to sing, and her participation in Weyburn’s Variations Choir and Presbyterian Church Choir brought many close friends into her life.
A final message from her boys: “Mom’s life is celebrated and cherished. She truly was everything you could ask for as a mother and a role model. She brought us together with an unbreakable bond of love for each other. Her death was a testimony to her life of love and care. She passed with a great presence of peace, and a knowing that she was going home to her father in Heaven. She knew that all was well with her family, and that she would see those that she loved dearly again, as she had taught them the power of faith in Christ. Well done, good and faithful servant.”
