Shirley Charmaine Bishop December 1 2021

Bishop, Shirley Charmaine – Age 94, of Dartmouth, beloved wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother, passed away peacefully November 27, 2021 in Twin Oaks Memorial Hospital, Musquodoboit Harbour.
Born in Halifax, she was the daughter of the late Edward Marshall McLellan and Ethel May (Pope) McLellan.
Shirley often spoke of the wonderful times she and her sister, Marie had as children playing near the shore of Bedford Basin picking periwinkles and looking for treasure that would wash up on the shore. Shirley was very active in school in her younger years, participating as a member of the school basketball team and as a drama student where she loved to act and direct in plays. As a young woman she worked for R.W. Wright & Co. Wholesale & Retail Stationers on Granville Street in Halifax. She managed to save some of her wages for a trip to New York which was a highlight in her life. There she saw a few famous people on the streets, one of which was Cary Grant. During her time as a Navy wife, she was a member of the Navy Wives and Wrens helping families with child care, food and clothing or any other need as required in her community. Shirley was the “Florence Nightingale” of the family, always prepared to help others in their time of need with her unique blend of love and support. She was a loving wife and mother who was devoted to her family and friends and always tried to instill in her sons the ideal of “doing unto others as you would have them do unto you”. Special mention should be made of Shirley’s friend of more than 60 years, Barbera Allen, who maintained a very close friendship with her till the end.
She is survived by her sons, Foster (Ann) and Paul; grandsons, Michael (Niki) and Nicholas (Amanda); granddaughters, Sarah and Cindy (Alex); great-grandsons, Hunter, Roman and Jackson. She was predeceased by her husband, Foster Frederick Bishop in 2005; and her sister, Marie McLellan in 2010.
Shirley’s family would like to thank the doctors, nurses and staff of Twin Oaks Memorial Hospital for their selfless compassion in the care of their mother.
As per Shirley’s wishes there will be no official service.
In lieu of flowers and in recognition of the Christmas season of giving, donations may be made to the Eastern Shore Food Bank in memory of Shirley Bishop.
