On Tuesday November 23, 2021, Sheila Broome (nee MacMillan) passed away peacefully at the age of 89 surrounded by her family just a week before her 90th birthday for which a reunion and family celebrations were planned. Sheila was born in Montreal to the late Hugh and Ida MacMillan. She is preceded in death by her sister Heather and her husband of 63 years, John M. Broome.
Sheila grew up in Montreal and spent summers in Brockville, Vermont and Tadoussac. She graduated from McGill University where she met her late husband John. Together they devoted their lives to raising four children, spending time with their friends and giving back to their communities. Golf and golf-based friendships were a central part of their lives and there has been an outpouring of best wishes from her overseas friends. Brockville was Sheila’s home over the last 25 years and she enjoyed being part of the church, social and volunteer communities and all of her time in Brockville. Sheila leaves behind four devoted children Gill (Alison), Peter (Sandra), Ted (Susan) and Jennifer. She also leaves behind 7 grandchildren (Valerie, Matthew, Bradley, Samantha, Kyle, Jackson and Kate) and 2 adorable great-grandchildren (Peter and George). Sheila was a loving grandmother and all of the grandchildren and great grandchildren loved her with all of their hearts. As did we all.
Sheila was a person with strong will, dedication and a love for life. When together with her sister Heather they were the life and joy of every event and all those who were lucky enough to be around them knew that together they were the life of the party. She had a very challenging road later in life due to health issues but met all of her challenges with strength, grace and courage. Everyone who knew her recognized and appreciated her strength despite all odds.
A small memorial service celebrating Sheila’s life will be held on Saturday, December 4th in Brockville. As expressions of sympathy, donations to May Court Brockville, Brockville and District Hospital Foundation, or the St. John’s United Church will be gratefully acknowledged.
Send condolences or share a special thought of Mickey on the Memory Wall above.
