Shawn was born on September 10, 1966 at BGH to his parents Robert and Bonnie Hurford (nee Arrand). He was a graduate of BCI, class of 1985, as an Ontario Scholar.
Shawn began his love of music at the age of 7 on the piano. Growing in his lessons he often took home medals from the Brockville Lion’s Club Music Festivals
His love of the stage started at BCI where he took on rolls with the drama club and operatic society and created some lifelong friendships that carried him through the years.
Life took him to St. Catherines where he began to build his life in the Toronto area for 3 or 4 years.
After hitch hiking journey on his own down the East he went out to Vancouver, BC to work for a few years.
Returning back to his old stomping grounds in the fall of 2003. In September 2004 he enrolled in St. Lawrence College Musical Theater program for 3 years where he participated in many plays; received numerous academic awards and graduated as valedictorian.
He moved back to Toronto to pursue his professional acting career. After struggling for some years, he settled in Ancaster, Ontario with Wayne Dailey, a former professor and wonderful friend, for the past 6 years.
Collapsing in his home on December 12, 2020 where it was discovered that he had inoperable brain tumours. He stayed at the Hamilton General Hospital for a month before being transferred to Brockville General Hospital where he passed away peacefully on April 8, 2021.
Our dear son, brother, nephew and friend was full of life. Ready to live life to the fullest, looking to find the best in all situations and always ready to pour out his heart to shower on those around.
He is survived by his loving parents Robert and Bonnie (nee Arrand) Hurford, brothers Scott Hurford (Erin), Paul Hurford (Pam) and sister Carolyn Hunink (Randy) as well as his loving nieces and nephews Amanda Cudmore (Dan), Tristan Hurford, Carly Hurford, Robert Hunink (Kaitlyn), Hendrina Hunink, Sarah Hurford, Johanna Hunink, Christina Hunink and great niece and nephews Zoey and Ben Cudmore, Lukas Carrol. Nephew to Doug Arrand (Janet) and Gary Arrand (Margaret) and loving cousin. He also had many great friends who were family to him.
A private service in honour and celebration of Shawn’s life will take place at the Bethel Christian Reformed Church, 117 Windsor Drive, Brockville on Monday, April 12, 2021.
Covid protocols will be in effect with a limited number of registered guests in attendance.
The service will also be available online (link will be added when confirmed).
Donation would be appreciated to the Brockville and District Hospital Foundation Palliative Care or the Brockville Operatic Society.
