Obituary
Samuel James McIntyre
George’s River
It is with heartfelt sadness we announce the passing of our beloved father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother and uncle, Samuel James McIntyre, aged 90, on Monday, January 25, 2021 at the Northside Community Guest Home.
Sam was the son of the late Samuel Muir and Angeline (Hosking) McIntyre. Although Sam was born in Acton, Ontario, he along with his family moved back to Florence, Cape Breton, settling eventually in George’s River. He worked most of his life with C.N. Railway and C.N. Marine. Sam was a quiet man by nature who enjoyed reading and telling stories. A jack of all trades, always with a pot of the strongest tea imaginable on the stove at the ready. He was an avid outdoorsman, finding great joy in hunting and fishing. He truly loved the Cape Breton fiddle music as he took every opportunity to travel with his family to Big Pond or Broad Cove for outdoor Celtic concerts, and even hosted a few kitchen ceilidhs when there was an occasion to do so.
Sam is survived by his five sons Joseph, Boularderie, David “Neily,” and, Blair “Micky,” both of Georges River, Gordie, Ontario, Gerard (Deanna), Sydney Mines, his five daughters, Diane (Danny) McKinnon, North Sydney, Mary Ann (Russell) Fitzgerald, Sharon (Simon) MacKinnon, Pam McIntyre, all of Sydney Mines, Melissa McIntyre, Ontario, his 19 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren; sisters Margaret Almon, Angeline Johnston, Ann Almon all of Georges River, Bernadette (Danny) Finney, Long Island, his brother Tom McIntyre, Georges River, a number of nieces and nephews.
Besides his parents Sam was predeceased by his first wife Mary Bernice Young, his second wife Jean Stamper, sister Mary Almon, brother Louis McIntyre and infant brothers Elmer and Harry, brothers-in-law Bill Almon, Louis Almon, Frank Almon and Chalmers Johnston.
The family would like to thank the staff of Joseph Hall at the Northside Community Guest Home, Dr. Peter Poulos and the nurses of palliative care for the excellent care and compassion given to Sam.
There will be no visitation. A funeral mass for Sam will be held 10:30 a.m. Friday at St. Joseph Church in Bras d’Or with Rev. Michel Excelant officiating. Covid-19 restrictions will be followed, masks will be mandatory and limited seating will be available in church. Burial will take place in St. Joseph Parish Cemetery at a later date. Funeral arrangements are under the care and direction of W.J. Dooley Funeral Home, 107 Pleasant Street, North Sydney.
