__________
Son, brother, husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather. Traveller, green thumb, CEO, pianist, hiker, curler, community server and esteemed critic of residential holiday-light displays. Art was many things during his long, full life. Above all, he was a kind, elegant and lovely soul.
Art passed away on October 17 with his loving wife of 60 years, Judith (nee Biehn), at his side, after uncomplainingly managing Parkinson’s-related challenges for numerous years. Along with Judy, Art is survived by his children Kelly (Andrew) Van Hemert, John (Liz Eustace) and Beverley (Lorin Raine), his grandchildren Madeline (Josh) Mashinter, Laura (Mike) MacGarvey, Julia Van Hemert, Lillie and Jasper Craig, and Robyn, Eden and Georgia Raine, and his great-granddaughter, Maren Mashinter. His sister, Jane Craig, will continue to remember him fondly as her favourite brother.
Born and raised in Sudbury, Art met Judy at the University of Western Ontario, eventually planting deep roots in Newmarket, Ontario, home of York Country Hospital (now Southlake Regional Health Centre), where he served in various senior roles over 24 years, including President and CEO, before retiring in 1994.
Art believed in serving one’s community, and was an ardent supporter of local arts and culture. He valued his many close friendships and held lifetime memberships in associations ranging from Sigma Chi Fraternity to the Men’s Probus Club of Newmarket. While he and Judy were fortunate to travel extensively, his preferred destination was the sauna at his beloved “camp” on Long Lake.
In keeping with Art’s wishes, cremation has taken place and the family will hold a private service. Donations in Art’s honour may be made to the Southlake Regional Health Centre Foundation. On-line condolences may be made at www.roadhouseandrose.com
