Russell Vincent Cameron 2021

It is with much sadness that we announce the passing of Russell Vincent Cameron of Sydney, NS, on Thursday, October 28, 2021.
Born September 20, 1925, he was the fourth of ten children of the late Joseph and Lily (Hogben) Cameron of Sydney, NS.
Dad served his country overseas during WWII as a member of the “West Novies” (C.B. Highlanders). We often told him that he liberated Holland all by himself. He spent 47 years working at Sydney Steel in the Blast Furnace Dept. He was a Master Mechanic and foreman of the department for several years before retiring in 1989.
Dad taught us how to fly kites, ride bikes and how to drive a car, which was an experience. He also taught us what it meant to be a decent human being and a loving parent. We are lucky to have so many memories to cherish of our wonderful dad.
Russell is survived by his loving and patient wife of 69 years, Rita (Gerard) Cameron; his children, Claire (Ron) Clarke, Brenda (John) Donovan and their children, Allison (Jordan) Murphy and Aidan Donovan, and Paul (Darlene) Cameron and Paul’s children, Jennifer and Darren Cameron. There are also four cherished great-grandchildren. Also surviving are two sisters, Barbara Robinson of Tacoma WA and Faith MacInnis of Glace Bay, NS.
Besides his parents, Russell was predeceased by his son, Dennis in 1969; his brothers, Donald, Teddy, Bernie, Jimmy, Art and William (in childhood); and sister, Mary King.
Our family would like to thank the staff of the D.V.A. unit at Taigh Na Mara for taking care of Russell for the last eight months. We would also like to thank Dr. Mike MacDonald and the E.R. staff, Dr. McCarville and nurse, Drew of 4A and Dr. John Ritter and nurse, Sherry of the Palliative Care Unit, all at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital. Your care and compassion for Russell were exceptional and we are very grateful. Thank you to Father Doug Murphy for administering last rites to Russell at the hospital.
At Russell’s request, there will be no visitation or public service. A private family burial will take place. All Covid-19 protocols will be in place.
