Obituary
It was 1944 when a beautiful, vibrant young woman and her family arrived in Penticton, BC from their Saskatchewan farm. She was delighted to see their new orchard home located on Lower Bench overlooking Okanagan Lake. That teenage girl was our mother, Rose Ida Maundrell, who passed away after a short battle with cancer on December 22, 2021, in her home – as per her wishes – surrounded by the love and care of her daughters.
In those early days, Mom helped her parents on the orchard and worked at the packing house. Eventually, she attended the Academy of Useful Arts in Vancouver and became an accomplished seamstress. She was always well dressed and made many of her own clothes, including her elaborate wedding dress.
In 1949, Rose wed August (Augie) Ciancone, a well-known local athlete in Kelowna. Augie passed away from leukemia just 2 1/2 years later. They had one child, Marina Rose. A very young widow and mother, Mom worked at the Province of BC government agent’s office in Kelowna. Eventually the Okanagan Telephone Company would employ her, and there she met Percy Maundrell who was the District Manager. They married in 1955 in Peachland and had two daughters, Darilyn and Launa. Percy passed away in 1971, leaving her widowed for a second time.
In 1978, Rose and daughters Darilyn and Launa moved to Summerland. She worked part-time at a local law firm. Once her daughters were grown, she made Penticton her home once again. In her 80th year, she brought her love of Okanagan history to a volunteer position at the Penticton Museum. She absolutely loved volunteering and remained dedicated to her weekly shift until the weeks shortly before her death.
Rose is predeceased by her parents, Louis and Pauline Morelli; brother John Morelli; sisters Margaret, Helen and Mary; and her husbands Augie Ciancone and Percy Maundrell. She is survived by her daughters Marina of Oakville, Ontario and Darilyn (Wayne) and Launa (Don) of Penticton, BC, as well as her grandchildren Natalie, Nicholas, Ashton and Liam.
Our mother was a hard-working, resourceful, fun-loving and generous woman with a deep reserve of inner strength. She loved to read, could make a delicious meal out of just about anything, and her homemade pies were exceptional!
She will be dearly missed by her family and friends. In lieu of flowers, donations to “The Okanagan Historical Society” or “Penticton & District Hospice Society” are greatly appreciated.
