OLNEY, Ronald (Ron) Kenneth
1945 – 2021
Ron passed away peacefully at home on the morning of June 18, in the arms of the love of his life and wife of almost 54 years, Marion Margaret Olney, along with his son Kurtis Olney and daughter Christi Marcine by his side. “Ronnie” was born on December 1, 1945 in Carnduff, SK and grew up in the district of Carievale developing an incredible work ethic doing every chore imaginable on the family farm and playing all possible sports. He especially loved baseball and hockey. He met Marion while attending Carievale High School but they waited until she returned from university to fall in love. They married on July 8, 1967, and their lifelong adventure took them to many different towns and cities that they moved to due to Ron’s promotions in the oil and gas industry. It was in Calgary that Ron ended his career of 30 years in well completions to pursue a second career in insurance. His years with Clarica/Sunlife offered him incredible success and the satisfaction in supporting his clients in the Red Deer and surrounding area. Along his journey, Ron became a loving father to Kurtis and Christi, a loyal father-in-law to Susan and Dave, and an amazing grandfather to James, Lauren, Samuel, Alex and Riley. Anyone who knew Ron would also know of his life-long passion for the game of golf. He not only loved to play the game but he volunteered on the board of directors for every golf course he belonged to. Ron believed in making things better and was willing to put his time and energy into it, leaving an impact wherever he went. With his friends and family, he always had a “bad” joke to tell, a Glen Livet (with one ice cube) to toast, a tee time to share, a sarcastic clever comment to give, and a game of cribbage to win. Ron’s love of the Edmonton Oilers and the Saskatchewan Roughriders was well known and we all walked carefully around him when either of them were not winning. In Ron’s later years he enjoyed many trips with Marion that included San Antonio, Palm Springs, Phoenix, Puerto Rico and Cancun. Ron’s favourite vacation was their river cruise from Budapest to Amsterdam which ended in a romantic stay in Paris. Ron and Marion also treated the entire family to vacations including Florida and Hawaii. The family will hold on tightly to these special memories that they made together. Even in the fight of his life against cancer, Ron found a way to win the family golf tournament held just last August in Radium. He will forever be a champion. While Ron didn’t get to enjoy his retirement for very long, he continued to fill his life full of many laughs, good times and tons of love. We will miss you.
Ron was predeceased by his parents, Kenneth and Marion Olney, his little brother, Edwin, his in-laws, James and Margaret Thomas, and his brother-in-law, Donald Thomas. The family would like to thank the staff of the Central Alberta Cancer Centre, and all of Alberta Health Services, who provided him with their care and compassion. A Celebration of Ron’s Life will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations in Ron’s honor may be made directly to the Central Alberta Cancer Centre at www.albertacancer.ca/donate/ or to a charity of the donor’s choice. Condolences may be sent or viewed at www.parklandfuneralhome.com. Arrangements in care of Parkland Funeral Home and Crematorium, 6287 – 67 A Street (Taylor Drive), Red Deer. 403.340.4040.
