Obituary
Ronald Lorne Horgus was born in Lethbridge, Alberta on March 2, 1953, the first born to Lorne Horgus and Elane (Barrows) Horgus. He was raised in the Milk River area, starting school in Milk River and later attending Masinasin through 8th grade. Ron graduated from Erle Rivers High School in Milk River in 1971 and then attended Olds College to study Agriculture for 1 year.
The family moved from Milk River to the farm in 1960. Growing up on the farm, Ron developed a love of farming. His joy and life goal was wrapped up in dirt. In 1974 Ron met and married Wendy Hoag and from that union were born Jennifer and Amanda. Ron and Wendy divorced in 1985.
In 1986 Ron married Susan Zipperian from Helena. Susan brought her two children, Eric and Kristen, into this blended family. By this time Ron had rented the Skippen place, and this is where the expanded family set up their home. Along with the busy life of raising children and keeping up with all of their activities, Ron was active in Wild Horse Racing and adult league hockey. Ron also loved riding motorcycle. With the same care that Ron took of his farm equipment, Ron cared for his Yamaha. He was proud that he put nearly 300K kilometers on his bike—about 20K of those while social distancing in 2020. Ron and Sue often trailered the bike to Nevada/Arizona in the winter for a week or two of riding in the desert. He also enjoyed his annual Wild Hogs Rides over a 12 year period with a group of guys. Ron loved the heat and was often quoted, “It’s beautiful! If it were 10 degrees warmer, it would be perfect.”
Ron cherished his family and friends. He was always ready to help others and seemed to have a particular concern for those who were often overlooked. Ron came to a personal faith in Jesus Christ in the early 70’s and this relationship was foundational to his life.
After Ron suffered a heart attack in the spring of 2019, he and Sue made the tough decision to draw back from their farming operation. Even in his battle against cancer, Ron was able to maintain a positive outlook on life and death. As he struggled for his next breath, Ron noted to family that he was in a “win/win” situation. If the Lord healed him it was a win, and if the Lord took him home it was a win.”
Ronald Lorne Horgus went to be with the Lord on Tuesday morning, November 30th at the age of 68. Ron was preceded in death by his dad, Lorne. He is survived by his wife of 35 years, Susan; daughters, Jennifer of Lewistown and Amanda of Great Falls; son Eric (Missy) of Gillette and Kristen (Tony) of Colorado; along with 9 grandchildren.
