Obituary of Robert John Baker
Robert John (Bob) Baker, known to his many friends as ‘Gus’, passed peacefully on Feb. 11, 2021. Bob lived his entire life in Port Colborne. He was the loving husband of Joan, dear father of Susan (Robert), Judy and John and caring grandfather of Alexander (Nicole), Sara and Ella.
As a young man, he played competitive hockey for Port Colborne, and took tremendous pride in winning two consecutive provincial team championships in 1953 (Midget) and in 1954 (Bantam), and then again in 1957 (Juvenile) before heading off to Queen’s University.
Known to many from his management roles at the Port Maitland plants, or as an avid golfer, boater and fisherman, Bob was invariably grateful, sincere, kind and generous.
He loved learning and was an avid reader – especially of newspapers. He also loved the outdoors, and ice skating, arm in arm, with the love of his life, the girl he met in high school and wed in 1962, Joan Winn.
Family was most important to Bob and he enjoyed nothing more than a family gathering over one of Joan’s beautiful meals, complete with stories, jokes, teasing and laughter. His wife Joan, children and grandchildren will remember the many trips, holidays, parties and fun they shared together. He will be greatly missed as a model husband, father and grandfather.
He will also be missed by his wonderful long-time Port Colborne friends, his dear Oakridge Crescent neighbors and his treasured golf friends.
He was pre-deceased by his parents Lincoln and Frances (née Sheppard), his sister Janet (Tom) Tichnovich and is survived by his sister Bonnie (Brian) Ewing and sister-in-law Sharon Matesic.
Instead of flowers, Bob would ask only that you pause, enjoy life, and show kindness to one another.
A private family service will be held at DAVIDSON FUNERAL HOME, 135 Clarence Street, Port Colborne. A celebration of Bob’s life will be held at a later date. Online guest register and condolences are available at www.davidsonfuneralhome.com
