Obituary
On Saturday, January 23, 2021, Robert (Bob) McPhee, loving husband and father of three children, passed away at the age of 92 in the Weyburn General Hospital.
He was predeceased by his father Andy McPhee; his mother Antoinette “Nettie” (nee: Dahl); brothers: Wilfred McPhee (Bessie), Clinton McPhee (Bernice), Cecil McPhee (Margaret), Morris McIntosh (Myrtle); sisters, Helen Erickson and Ruth Reid (Jim); his father and mother-in-law Wayne Hurlburt (Herta).
Bob is survived by his wife Joyce; his three children: Sheryl McPhee (Doug Erickson), Maureen Kinch (Greg) and Ken McPhee (Barbara); his sister-in-law Lynn McFarlane (Jack); 7 grandchildren; 14 great grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
Bob loved the farming life. The early years were hard with very little money, but it provided a place to raise a family and enjoy a good life with family and friends. The family farm was primarily a grain farm, so Bob worked other jobs such as carpentry and painting to supplement their income. He gradually expanded the family farm to 6 quarters. He was very active in the community serving on many boards, committees and clubs supporting the Ceylon area, always with one eye on how to improve the community for all. He retired from farming in the fall of 1981 at the young age of 53. He had just finished the harvest for the year and walked into the kitchen of the farmhouse after the last load of grain was in the bins and announced he was retiring, much to everyone’s surprise. Thus, the second chapter of Bob and Joyce’s long and loving 71-year marriage began. Retirement allowed Bob to pursue other interests such as travelling. They spent 20 years travelling to Mesa, Arizona for the winter months and developed a whole new circle of good friends. They moved from the family farm to Weyburn in 1986. They continued to travel in their motorhome during the summer to see new sights, golf, and visit with family. They loved to dance – old time waltz, foxtrot and the polka to name a few – and even participated in dance competitions. Bob had a passion for cameras and started a small collection. Retirement also allowed him to continue his interest in woodworking, making all kinds of things from clocks to ‘whirly jigs’ as the grandkids would say. Bob was a kind and gentle soul always looking on the bright side of life and always making time for his family. He enjoyed golfing with his grandsons and teaching his granddaughters to waltz. They all adored him.
Per Bob’s wishes there will be no funeral and a small family interment will take place at Ceylon Cemetery at a later date.
