Rita’s Obituary
Rita Nellie Thunder passed away, peacefully, surrounded by family on May 28, 2021 at the Slave Lake Long-term Care Facility at the age of 72. She was born on July 16, 1948 in Whitefish Lake First Nation #459, Alberta Canada.
Rita was predeceased by her parents, George and Edith Laboucan, her husband Fredrick Thunder, her daughter, Rose, her son Frank, her grandson Lee, and her siblings Norman George, Sammy, David and Shirley. She is survived by her four brothers, James, Peter, Floyd and Alvin, her two sisters Martha and Arlene, her six children, Jesse, Paddy, Paul, George, Shirley and Delmer, her grandchildren Charlotte, Alec, Dustin, Thaddeus, Emmy, Elliot, Michelle, Patrick, Shelby, Gabe, Abel, Kenai, Ernest, Freddie, Daniel, Kyron, Wyatt, Thomas, Skyler, Chance, Georgia, Levi, Glen, Christopher and Ruben, and Sammy, her great-grandchildren Afeni, Xavier, Essence, Brooke, Carmen, Arcadian, Ryleigh, Noah, Xylan, Skydan, Zachariah, Bella, Kyron, Gracelyn, and Emma, Bradley, Alex, and Jean.
Rita was a devoted sister, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She loved keeping her grand children and her great-grandchildren. She made sure they were always well fed and kept safe. She loved spending time with family and friends. She loved to joke and laugh with them and she made sure there was tea, soup and bannock for her visitors. She was always kind and generous to everyone she knew.
Rita was a strong woman and a fighter, which is how she got her nickname, “toughie.” She loved her First Nation heritage, she was always making traditional food, such as, bannock, panasawan, smoked fish, smoked ribs, to name a few.
