Richard Paul Fuchs, 72, passed away at the Health Science Centre at St. John’s, Newfoundland on November 10th, 2021.
He is predeceased by his parents Edward (NYPD) and Helen (Abate) Fuchs; and his brothers: Douglas, Christopher and Kenneth.
Rich is survived by his wife and life partner, Claire; his children in Newfoundland: daughter Hannah Fuchs and her daughter Kay Ryan and son Matthew Fuchs (Kimberley Collins) and their son Abraham Fuchs; daughter Eleanor Fuchs, Minnesota; and his brother Ed Fuchs, Point Pleasant NJ. Rich is also fondly remembered with love and affection by Claire’s children: Chad Murphy (Kimberley Furlong) and their son Connor and Trent (Pamela) Murphy and their daughter Cairah; sister-in-law Sadie Dunphy.
Rich was born in the Bronx, New York and immigrated to Canada in 1971 to attend graduate school at Memorial University. His specialty in rural development led to a career with the Newfoundland and Labrador Provincial government. He was one of the earliest advocates of the development of information industries which today are flourishing in the province. Rich later joined Canada’s International Development Research Centre and following a final assignment as IDRC’s Regional Director for Southeast Asia in Singapore he made his way back to Newfoundland. Rich was proud to call Newfoundland his home, proud to be a Canadian citizen, and he will be forever missed by a global network of friends and colleagues. Rich was a basketball player and a coach. Saturday mornings would often find him at the Buckmaster Circle’s gym teaching kids the game. He was also a golfer. Former team mates and golfing partners recall his jump shot was better than his putting. He was also a dancer, a man full of life, a mixture of humility, humour, compassion, and affection for his children, grandchildren, and the love of his life, Claire. His loved ones imagine him today in a place where he can be a kid again.
In keeping with Rich’s wishes, cremation has taken place. The family will receive visitors at Caul’s Funeral Home, 84 LeMarchant Road on Saturday, November 13th, 2021 from 2 to 4 PM and 7 to 9 PM. His memorial service will be held at Caul’s Chapel on Sunday, November 14, 2021 at 2 p.m and is by invitation only. Provincial COVID regulations require attendees to wear a mask. For those who cannot attend the funeral in person but wish to do so virtually, please visit vimeo.com/event/1500469.
Flowers are graciously accepted, or donations in Rich’s memory can be made to the Association of New Canadians (www.ancnl.ca/)
Our most sincere sympathies to the family and friends of Richard Fuchs 2021..
