Raymond’s Obituary
COTTREAU, Raymond James – Wedgeport
Raymond James Cottreau, 89, Upper Wedgeport, Yarmouth County, passed away peacefully with his loving family at his side in the early hours of February 27, 2021 in Yarmouth Regional Hospital.
Born July 31, 1931 in Wedgeport, he was the son of the late Frank and Hilda (Boudreau) Cottreau. Raymond was a retired lobster fisherman and then a cook for thirty-four years aboard The Lady Yvette scallop dragger, and he was well respected for his character and cooking skills by his fellow shipmates. In his spare time, he enjoyed gardening, the outdoors, and often took inspiration from his coastal lifestyle. With masterful craftmanship and as a jack of all trades, he was always working on a project, and many of his model ships and boats are displayed proudly in the Wedgeport Tuna Museum, where he would go to enjoy a coffee and a chat in the mornings with his friends. Devoted to his family, Raymond was a humble, hard working, and faithful man, and the simple things in life brought him much happiness. He will be sorely missed by all those he leaves behind. He spent fourteen memorable years camping at Belle Baie Campground with his wife Eleanor, and every Friday night they would waltz to their favorite music. In his later years, he enjoyed family time watching old Westerns from his chair.
He was predeceased by the love of his life, Eleanor, his wife of fifty-eight years. A caring father, he is survived by his children Allen Cottreau, Wedgeport; Gordon Cottreau, Yarmouth; Frank (Jody Churchill) Yarmouth; Gregory Cottreau, Wedgeport; Gail (Kenny) d’Entremont, Wedgeport; Peggy (Wade) Newell, Plymouth; Bonnie (Landon) Shand, East Pubnico. He was also dearly loved by his fourteen grandchildren Kelly, Jennifer, Braden, Brody, Candace, Logan, Shane, Stephanie, Tracie (predeceased), Kristan, Garrett, Cory, Macy, and Maddox and his four great-grand-children Sarah, Meghan, Ava, and Jack. He is survived by brother Michael (Janet) Cottreau, Sackville, and he was predeceased by a sister, Margaret Jefferson, as well as by brothers, Ernest, Pius and William Cottreau.
Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to Huskilson’s Funeral Home, Yarmouth. A Funeral Mass will be held at St. Michael’s Catholic Church, Wedgeport at 11:00 a.m., Tuesday, March 2, 2021. (Mass will be live-streamed). Memorial donations may be made to the Yarmouth Hospital Foundation or to a charity of choice.
