Obituary
Phyllis A. Anderson
Sydney Mines
It is with broken hearts that we announce the peaceful passing of Phyllis A. Anderson, 91, beloved mother, grandmother, aunt and friend on Wednesday, February 24, 2021, after a brief battle with cancer, surrounded by her loving family.
Born in North Sydney, she was the daughter of the late George and Pearl Reid. After growing up in Sydney, she moved back to the Northside in 1948, when she married her husband Ken Anderson.
Phyllis had a long history in the fishing industry on the Northside, as a faithful supporter of her husband Ken, during his years with National Sea Products. She often boasted that you couldn’t stump her when it came to identifying a fish and for a period of time, she put her skills to the test and operated “Phyl’s” Fish Market on Queen Street in North Sydney.
She was active as a mom and in her community as a volunteer with Home and School Associations, teaching Sunday school at Calvary Baptist Church and along with her husband, was instrumental in bringing the Crippled Children’s Clinic to Cape Breton through their work with the North Sydney Rotary Club.
Phyllis enjoyed travelling to many places over her life whether it was to Florida for the winter, the Caribbean or summers spent at the cabin or in Whycocomagh. She loved to cook and entertain large crowds and Sunday dinners with family were her favourite because family meant everything.
Phyllis is survived by her daughter Cathy Anderson, Sydney Mines; her grandson Tyler Jackson; nephew Bobby Griffin, North Sydney, sister-in-law Minnie Roberts, along with several nieces, nephews, cousins and many others who lovingly referred to her as “Mom”.
Besides her parents, Phyllis was predeceased by her husband Kenneth Anderson, daughter Judy Jackson, an infant son, her sister Georgie Griffin, father and mother-in-law Archie and Hilda Anderson and several brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law.
Visitation for Phyllis will be 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Sunday, in the W.J. Dooley Funeral Home, 107 Pleasant St., North Sydney, where Covid-19 restrictions will be in place regarding the wearing of masks and social distancing. A funeral service will take place at a later date.
Memorial donations may be made to the Cape Breton Cancer Centre Patient Care Fund or Hospice/Palliative Care Society of Cape Breton.
