Peter Abram Giesbrecht Sunday August 15th 2021

After a short illness, Peter Giesbrecht passed away peacefully with his family by his side. He was deeply loved by his family and his church community, and his family is grateful for the condolences and memories that have been shared. His leaves behind his daughter Norma (David) son Reg, and grandchildren Jennifer (Tyrone), Cory (Stephanie), Chris (Myra), Jonathan (Erin), and great grandchildren Samuel and Sadie.
Peter was born in Winkler, Manitoba to Abe and Katherine Giesbrecht. Peter would often tell his grandchildren stories of his childhood, with some personal favourites being told often to our great delight. One that stands out is when he taught himself to play the violin – he was very musically gifted from a young age – but without the means to purchase a violin, he had to get creative. Young Peter would sneak back into the classroom while everyone was away for lunch, and began teaching himself using scales he knew from singing. One day his teacher asked if someone could play the violin, to which Peter volunteered. When his teacher asked this young farm boy where he learned to play the violin, he sheepishly confessed that it was on that very violin! Ever resourceful, Peter’s can-do attitude served him well throughout his life.
Peter found a great love with his wife Marie, and his children and grandchildren were enveloped in that love. Peter always gave credit to Marie for the beautiful life he lived, and on his last day continued to say “this was all because of an amazing woman named Marie.” From leaving everything and everyone they knew in Winkler to start their lives in Winnipeg, they were steadfast in their love and support of one another. We are so comforted knowing they are divinely together now.
Peter had faith. It was a primary part of his life, and guided him into many communities that benefited from his support, assistance, and knowledge. Peter would often shed a tear discussing Jesus’ sacrifice on the cross, and the gift of salvation. For a man with both feet firmly on the ground, his heart soared with love for his saviour.
Not everyone gets a man like Peter in their lives, we consider ourselves very blessed to have known and loved him. We will carry him in all we do.
Peter kept a brochure from Operation Smile on his living room table for many months, saying it was his favourite charity and how sweet the little ones are that need these surgeries. Please consider donating to Operation Smile in memory of him.
