Pearl was born in Thetford Mines, Quebec, the daughter of Herbert Olm and Florence Annie (Morrison) Olm. She moved to Port Colborne with her family when she was a young child in Grade 3. She attended Elm Street School, Snider School and Port Colborne High School. Pearl was a young teen when she first spotted the young man who was to become her husband. She was sitting with her mother on the porch, asking if she could go on a date with someone from school. Her mother said ‘no’ then pointed across the street at Don, and said, ‘but if you’d like to date HIM then I approve’. Pearl looked at Don and that was the beginning of a love story! They would often go to singing lessons and church together, and in 1950 they were married. They were soul mates.
Pearl had many passions in her life including family, faith, serving others, and music. She was a devout Christian and had a strong faith throughout her life. She served others through her career, working at Sunset Haven Home for the Aged as a Health Care Aide and later the Volunteer Coordinator. After she retired, Pearl continued to advocate for elderly persons through volunteer and palliative care work. She was a strong, selfless, and empathetic person with a deep passion for helping others. Music was a significant part of Pearl’s life. She had a beautiful alto voice; she sang in many festivals and competitions as a young girl and was part of several choirs. She and Don sang many duets together in church. In her final days, music soothed and comforted her.
Pearl’s light and kind presence will be remembered by all, and she will be deeply missed by her family and friends.
The family would like to extend a special thank you to the care providers at Gilmore Lodge.
