Mom’s Story
Mom’s parents had nine children. She was the fifth oldest, also the oldest girl and raised on a tobacco farm, so she was familiar with hard work. Her journey began at the age of fifteen when she left home for Tillsonburg, where a kind lady, found her sleeping on her porch, took her in and found her a job as a waitress. Later she met the love of her life, Louie, whom she married in 1948 and they had their first born in 1951, a little girl, Brenda. Sad to say, their hearts were broken when Brenda passed away at the age of 3 ½. Little did they know that eight months later God would bless them with a healthy baby boy, Jimmy P.
Working in manufacturing through the week and in tobacco on weekends, mom and dad bought their first house in the early sixties. She then went to night school to become a hairdresser and with help of Louie and others, they opened up La Coiffure Hairstyles, which became very successful. Next, mom was hit from behind in a car accident, injuring her so severely that it broke her back. She recovered from surgery and two months in the hospital, but could no longer follow her dream because of her injury.
Mom, then put her managerial skills to works at Towers Department Store, GWG, Pioneer Cleaners, NACL – The Laundry, Town and Country and Penningtons. She also helped out at the YM-YWCA.
When she retired, she took in borders, which provided her with company and a bit of security. Mom developed very good friendships by opening up her home. Another part of her life was her gardening, which brought her such happiness. She lived independently until she experienced too many falls and a broken hip, 1 ½ years ago. Reluctantly, she went to a wonderful retirement home and got the great care she deserved. Thanks, to so many that helped her on the last chapter of her journey and to the many people that frequently asked how she was doing. And a very special thanks to the musketeers that she loved with all her heart.
Cremation has taken place. A private graveside service at St. Joseph’s Cemetery. Funeral arrangements entrusted to McCleister Funeral Home, 495 Park Road North, Brantford.
