Obituary
“A man travels the world over in search of what he needs, and returns home to find it.” – G. Moore
Today we bury an encyclopedia. ‘The Journeyman’ departed this life at the age of 86 after a lengthy illness. For many years, Paul eagerly awaited eternity. Oh how he looked forward to learning the answers to his plethora of unanswered questions!
Born in Ottbergen, Germany, his vast curiosities led him to gain his Tischler papers. Paul’s knowledge expanded while working throughout central Europe, along with travels of the good life in Italy. He landed in Canada in 1958 with $5 in his pocket, a suitcase crammed with books, and intentions to work and to then continue exploring the world. These plans were derailed his first evening in Kelowna when introduced to Ruby.
Paul embraced this country and its opportunities. He loved to work and met every challenge. Through his unwavering faith, determination, work ethic, grit and tough love, the years created remembrances and countless stories via his business, marriage, family, parish, choirs, and living with Parkinson’s. When facing adversities, he said, “in comparison to what?” Paul was fond of sayings and idioms.
Like a gigantic tree, his roots and branches stretched far beyond one descriptor. Strong—both body and mind. Devout. Fearless. Honourable. Independent. Direct. Complex. Serious. Intense. Well-read with a photographic mind. Generous. Funny. Cheeky. Reflective. Observant. Reliable. Traditional. Stern. Stoic. Claustrophobic. A Supporter. Thinker. Delegate. Advocate. Olympic Fan. Fisherman. Volunteer. Builder. Friend. Uncle. Opa. Great Opa. Dad… He did not waver from his obligations, and noted this quote of St. Paul towards the end of his life: “I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith.”
Paul was predeceased by his wife Ruby (2007), parents Joseph and Rosa, brother Joseph, grandchildren Michael and Jonah. He is survived by: children Mark (Theresa), Patty, Liz, Rose (Wolfgang), Conrad (Jane), John (Barbara), and Robert (Carla); eleven grandchildren and three great-granddaughters; brother Otto (Anneliese), sisters Rosemarie (Jupp) and Rita (Norbert), sister-in-law Ria; and extended family in Kelowna and Germany.
To ALL the people that assisted Paul along his life’s journey, we extend gratitude to each and every one of you. We would like to recognize the range of gifted health care workers spending time with Dad providing attention and comfort. You are seen, and he was blessed.
Those of you wishing to remember Paul, you are invited to contribute to his mantra of “good will” by bolstering the community in your own way, a notable ‘Paul’ism. Kindly no flowers. Condolences can be sent to the family by visiting www.everdenrust.com or via the fading art of letter writing to c/o 304A, 3001 Tutt St, Kelowna, BC V1Y 2H4.
“I tried my best. I have fulfilled my contract. Vaya con Dios. Ultreya. Auf Wiedersehen.” – Paul Leinemann, KofC FPC #2558
A Prayer Vigil Service will be held on Monday, November 29, 2021 at 6:00 pm at Immaculate Conception Church. A Mass of Christian Burial will take place on Tuesday, November 30, 2021 at 10:30 am at Immaculate Conception Church. The Rite of Committal will follow at Immaculate Conception Cemetery. Unfortunately, the family will not be hosting a reception at this time which would sadden Paul. Although he relished time immersed in his books, he enjoyed the camaraderie of all gatherings. May he rest in eternal peace.
