Obituary
It is with profound sadness that the family of Patricia “Pat” Louise (Maber) Leger announce her passing which occurred at the Saint John Regional Hospital on October 25, 2021. Born in Saint John, NB on May 5th, 1935, she was the daughter of the late Harold and Etta (Foster) Maber.
She is survived by her devoted children; Peter (Mary) Jensen of Saint John, NB; Mark (Susan) Jensen of Lantz, NS; Andrew (Suzanne) Leger of Dieppe, NB; Trish (Darren) Wheaton of Lower Coverdale, NB and Barry (Lynne) Leger of Upper Golden Grove, NB. She leaves behind ten loving grandchildren – Joseph, John, Nicholas, Jillian, Colin, Nathalie, Noah, Ben, Madelyn and Liam. In addition, she is survived by her sister, Sandra Maber (Simpson) of Saint John, NB; her brother Kenneth Maber of Miami, FL; three sisters-in-law, Elizabeth (Paul) Reid of Huntsville, ON, Catherine “Kay” Williams of Saint John, NB, Amelia “Toby” Legere of Saint John, NB; two brothers-in-law, Paul (Michele) of St. Andrews, NB and Michael Leger of Alberta, as well as many nieces and nephews. She is also survived by her very special lifelong friend Eleanor Hanlon.
Pat graduated from Saint John High School in 1953. She went on to obtain her Teacher’s License in 1956 from the Board of Education for the Province of New Brunswick and then after having her 6 children, decided to pursue her Bachelor of Teaching Degree from UNBSJ, graduating in 1978, in the First Division. Throughout her career she held many teaching positions starting off at Rockwood Park Elementary School and ultimately filling in on numerous occasions as a very popular and highly sought-after supply teacher. Her passion in education was teaching children in the elementary school level. This explains her innate ability to provide a perfectly idyllic childhood experience for her own children and grandchildren.
She embodied grace, beauty and elegance which complemented her life partner, Barry’s, wit and charm. They were inseparable and were a living model to their children on what a marriage and true partnership should be.
Her family was her pride and joy. Having watched her children grow and become parents themselves, her joy was evident when they all came together under one roof in their family home or cottage. She was truly selfless always putting others needs above her own and had a way of making you feel like you were the most important person in the room. She was always ready with a warm blanket and tea and cookies to make you feel welcome and loved. Pat was strong and independent, quietly creative through her dress design drawings, a continuous learner and enjoyed light reading on topics involving science and physiology of the brain.
She also enjoyed sitting in the sun on the front porch of the family cottage on the St. John River, enjoying the infamous sunsets, and as recent as this summer even taking a few dips in the water and enjoying the absolute quiet and stillness offered by an afternoon sail on a calm day.
She was a doting grandmother to her grandchildren and being a born educator was instrumental in shaping their young minds. Every visit was play-time with Nanny, oftentimes being hidden away in the back room so that all her attention was devoted to just them. They will miss her dearly.
In addition to her parents, Patricia was pre-deceased by her husband of 56 years, Barry Leger; her first husband Ejner Jensen; her son Eric Jensen; her father and mother-in-law, Leo and Margaret (Beckingham) Legere; her brothers, Donald Maber and his wife Florence Maber, Douglas Maber and his wife Fernand Maber, William Maber; brothers-in-law, Edmund “Ned” Legere, Peter Simpson and Ronald Williams; sisters-in-law, Frances “Fran” Murphy and her husband Douglas Murphy, Sister Therese of the Divine Silence (nee Joan Leger), Sandra Maber, as well as her niece Trez Legere, and nephews Joey Maber and Mark Reid.
The family would like to thank the staff of the Emergency Department and Palliative Care Unit at the Saint John Regional Hospital. Special thanks as well to Father Jim McQuade for his spiritual guidance throughout this difficult time.
