Death Notice
It is with great sadness that the family of Okja Kiel announce her passing in Kilworth/Komoka on Thursday March 25, 2021 at the age of 79. Okja had fought a brief but courageous battle with pancreatic cancer and was comforted by having her final days at home surrounded by her loving family.
Okja was born in South Korea and she was the oldest daughter of 8 children. She had two children with her husband Tai and immigrated to Canada as a young family. Okja and Tai spent the majority of their lives in South Western Ontario as grocery store owners in Bright’s Grove and Alvinston. They were active and respected members of the communities they served.
From the day Okja was diagnosed with her illness, she never complained and was always quick with a smile and a joke. She loved to sing, to share Korean cooking tips, as well as gardening advice. She was an active member of her Korean Church as well as an avid golfer. She was an amazing woman, with the kindest heart and loved by all, including her golfing ladies who said they were all “crazy” together. She will be missed dearly.
The family would like to thank the Doctors, Nurses, and Palliative Care team of the London Health Science Centre (LHSC), the London Regional Cancer Program (LRCP), and the South West Local Health Integration Network (LHIN). They are grateful for the care, attention and support for Okja in her final eleven months.
Okja is survived by her loving husband Tai Kiel of 53 years, her daughter Hyun-Ok “Hanoki” Kiel (Stephen Green) of Toronto, and her son Hyun “Gunner” Kiel (Colleen Campbell) of Toronto.
No services will be held but if you would like to honour Okja please consider to donate to Pancreatic Cancer Canada on her behalf… or to the Cancer program at London Health Sciences Centre (LHSF).
Our most sincere sympathies to the family and friends of Okja Kiel 2021..
