McIntyre, Norman Stirling
April 23, 1932 – January 12, 2021
Norm was the first of five brothers born to Ruth Hillis and John McIntyre and was raised around Macklin, Saskatchewan. Ian, Murray, Gary, and Keith filled out the family and laid the foundation for a lively childhood and lifelong desire to stay close regardless of miles that might come between them.
Norm was capable and personable and coupled with his willingness to take on opportunities, he became a quiet leader and was a genuinely caring person.
He saw the best in people, was quick to strike up a conversation and knew how to make people feel welcome. Those who knew Norm saw that he was a great partner, father, and advisor.
Norm’s work life began as a hand in farmer’s fields but even before graduating from high school he was recruited by the local RBC branch. So began a life of exploring and serving in many communities. A year before being transferred to Ontario he wed his destined partner in life, Thelma Everitt. The family was soon complete as they welcomed Lynda and Scott. The bank kept the family on the move, allowing them to experience many communities. Barrie was their first Ontario home followed by Corunna, Goderich, Sault Ste Marie, Sudbury, and Huntsville until finally Norm and Thelma returned to Barrie for their retirement years. In 2016 Norm and Thelma moved to Guelph’s Village by the Arboretum to be closer to their daughter.
He enjoyed bridge, golf and curling but was also game to partake in other activities like cross-country skiing, softball with the bank team or whatever might be going on with family and friends. Norm also enjoyed travelling and befriended everyone he met. He was very active in the church and service clubs wherever he lived, and part of his legacy is the contributions he made through his leadership and high sense of responsibility.
After retiring from the bank, he took on another part time opportunity as a financial planner for fellow seniors. This allowed Norm to continue to enjoy meeting and helping people. It also permitted a freer lifestyle and the ability to enjoy his pursuits and more time relaxing with family and friends each summer at their cottage on Moon River in Bala.
Norm was a proud Grandpa to Danielle, Sydney and Neva McIntyre and Sarah and Andrew Spencer. He always enjoyed hearing their news and loved spending time with them during their visits especially at the family cottage. He will be greatly missed by son-in-law Ron Spencer and daughters-in-law Clare and Denise, his brothers Ian, Murray, Gary, Keith, and brother-in-law Ted and their extended families.
Despite some health challenges in the last few years Norm never complained and was forever positive. Always thoughtful we imagine Norm must have had a hand in leaving us with little fuss. Dearly loved he leaves us with cherished memories.
The family wishes to thank the healthcare workers at the Guelph General Hospital especially the nurses on 4-West for their compassionate care.
A celebration of life will take place when it is safe to do so.
As expressions of sympathy, donations to the Alzheimer’s Society or Canadian Cancer Society would be appreciated by the family. Cards are available at the funeral home (519-821-5077) and condolences may be sent to www.gilbertmacintyreandson.com.
