Stavenow, Norma June (Flannigan):
1931 – 2021
It is with great sadness that the family of Norma June Stavenow (Flannigan) of Waterloo announce her passing on Tuesday, August 10, 2021, at Lisaard House Hospice in Cambridge, Ontario, at the age of 90.
She was born on June 25, 1931, in London, Ontario. Junes graduated from a one-room, 8th-grade elementary school in the country, outside of London, then attended Sir Adam Beck Collegiate in London. She attained her Registered Nurse at Victoria Hospital School of Nursing and then a Certificate of Public Health Nurse at the University of Western Ontario in London. Her first job was Nurse in Charge of the Waterloo Branch of Victorian Order of Nurses.
She married John Stavenow (now deceased) and became the mother of four sons, grandmother to six grandchildren and great-grandmother to five great-grandchildren.
Her life was devoted to her family and a career in Public Health and Community Nursing in Waterloo, Chedoke-McMaster, Hamilton and Guelph. She also taught Nursing and First Aid as a 2nd Lieutenant in the 12th Medical Company Army Reserves. She retired after 23 years as a case manager with Wellington-Dufferin-Guelph Home Care Program.
On retirement, she did volunteer work with the City of Waterloo and took credit courses at the University of Waterloo. She loved to sew and create artwork with stained glass and enjoyed a good game of bridge with friends. She also loved to travel and see the world with her good friend Rudy Gille (predeceased). The utmost importance to June was her family. She and her sons created and built the family cottage, which has been a great source of pleasure and food for the soul, set in a beautiful spot of nature on Lake Huron. The sunsets and night skies are magnificent! Many family gatherings including four generations have been enjoyed at the cottage, making lasting memories.
She is predeceased by parents Norman Flannigan and Letta Flannigan (Attril), brothers Lloyd, Mel, Louis Flannigan, and sister Thelma Henderson (Flannigan), all of London, Ontario.
June is survived by her four loving sons and families: Robert (Debbie) of St. Catharines, Bryan of Kitchener, Shane (Gale) of Ayr, and Peter (Lorraine) of Waterloo. Six grandchildren: Matthew (Chantal) of Martensville, Saskatchewan, Julie (Nate) of Kingston, Benjamin (Natasha) of Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Emma (Nate) Silkiewycz of Scotland, Ontario, Daniel and John of Waterloo. Five great-grandchildren: Adriana, Tristan, Wyatt, Desmond and Griffin. She is also survived by her brother Jim Flannigan of London, and sister-in-law Marjorie Flannigan (Louis) of London and many nieces and nephews.
We would like to thank all of her caregivers, neighbours, and the staff at Lisaard House.
June’s family will receive relatives and friends from 2 to 2:45 p.m. on Saturday, August 21, 2021, at the Henry Walser Funeral Home, 507 Frederick Street, Kitchener, with a Celebration of Life in the chapel at 3 p.m. Those wishing to attend June’s visitation and service must RSVP through the funeral home website or by calling 519-749-8467.
