Obituary
Nicole G. GOURRET
April 24, 1944 – November 1st, 2021
Peacefully on Monday, November 1st, Nicole passed away at home as she wanted with her loved ones by her side. She left with great courage and dignity after a short but difficult battle with cancer.
Benediction was on November 3rd.
She was predeceased by her parents Eugène and Germaine Gourret and by her brother Pierre. She is survived by her long-time best friend, partner and companion in adventures Andrée Bazinet and by her loving son Gilles Gourret-Parmentier. Born in Casablanca, Morocco, she earned a doctorate in limnology, her profession, and was also an ecotoxicologist, microbiologist and teacher. She studied at Aix-Marseille Université, Faculté des Sciences St Jérôme and at the Institut Européen d’Ecologie (Metz), among others.
She worked and lived in Morocco, in France and Lebanon before settling in Ottawa in 2004. She taught at the Ecole Mohammadia d’ingénieurs in Rabat, worked at the then Office National de l’Eau Potable (ONEP) in Rabat, worked on water projects with the World Health Organization and later taught science at Lycée Verdun in Beirut.
A mother, a scientist, a teacher, she deeply influenced those close to her. A windsurfer, a top-level fencer, a skier, once in Canada she took up golf, cross-country skiing with very limited success, snowshoeing, and was an enthusiastic curler at the Ottawa Curling Club. She volunteered for several years at the Fletcher Wildlife Garden as well as with various local and national curling events.
We wish to thank the Champlain Home and Community Care Support Services and the nurses at Bayshore Home Care Solutions in Carleton Place for their outstanding support and care, as well as heartfelt thanks to Dr. Alexandra Roy who went well above and beyond what one would expect.
Please feel free to share condolences on the funeral homes tribute wall. Arrangements entrusted to the Alan R. Barker Funeral Home Carleton Place.
