Neil David Feltmate
1953-2021
Feltmate, Neil David -It is with
great sadness we announce the sudden passing of Neil David Feltmate,
age 67, of Kempt Road, Richmond County (formerly of Hazel Hill,
Guysborough Co.), that occurred at Cape Breton Regional
Hospital, Sydney, Nova Scotia on June 7th.
Born in Canso on November 12, 1953 he was the son of the late
Neil and Edith (Grant) Feltmate.
Neil had a very full life. He built his own service station
in Hazel Hill, “Feltmate Brother’s Irving” in 1975 which he
ran for 11 years. During that time he also acquired T&J’s Esso
in Canso. He was in competition with himself for almost a decade,
which was a running joke in the town.
Due to some health issues, he sold the two stations, drove a
school bus for a few months and then took a job with the Department of
Justice as a Motor Vehicle Inspector. This new job led him to move his
family to Kempt Road, a property he loved and took great pride in.
Neil loved his job of 28 years, and he especially loved meeting new
people and made many friends all over the province.
After Neil retired, he spent a year as maintenance supervisor
at the School Bus Garage in Mulgrave. He helped set up Mac Motors in
Port Hawkesbury and loved going in to chat with the boys and Sheila on
a regular basis. One of his great joys was spending time at
his good friend Gary Benison’s farm. He loved to help with silage and
haying. And if there was a mechanical issue with the equipment, he was
on it.
Neil was well known in the community. Always offering a
helping hand. To plow a driveway, help fix your car or lend a tool –
you could count on him. Neil had a great love of music, he played many
instruments, getting together with family and friends for a
“diddy” was a cherished event for him. He loved hunting and
fishing. There were many trips with his brothers, son, grandson,
son-in-law and brother in–laws over the years. Kiley’s Lake
and Cooeycoff were his favorite spots. We are so blessed to
have many stories to share – the fish is longer – there are more
points on the buck, every time he retold the story; (we will keep that
tradition going for sure!)
He was a real family man. He loved his family deeply and was
proud of every accomplishment, no matter how small. He was a protector
and a person you could confide in and the giver of all advise. He was
the one we turned to for everything. He had many running jokes with
his wife, children, grandchildren and great grandson;
we don’t say Grace (lol)
Matt was the fall guy for anything that went missing
– especially the jug of gas
he was always plotting a way to dip into his granddaughter
Dana’s expense account
Neil and his great grandson Brody had nick names for each
other, Darryl and Jerry when they played garage and those names came
out at other fun times too!
He is survived by his wife Margaret (Roberts) of 47 years.
Son Troy (Trina), Port Hawkesbury; Daughter Judy (Gary) McNamara,
Kempt Road, Granddaughter; Dana (Gage) Burke, Antigonish, Grandson;
Matt (Alyssa) McNamara, Lower River, Great Grandson; Brody McNamara
Bouman; Lower River. Neil was very excited to be welcoming another
Great Grandchild into the family in December of this year (Dana and
Gage). Sister; Judy (Dave) Rye, New Brunswick, brothers;
Wayne (Phyllis), Alberta, Dana (Jean), Hazel Hill, Phillip, Alberta,
Mark, River Bourgeois, Mike (Mary), Hazel Hill, half sister; Margaret
(Harry), Sus England and many nieces and nephews who will all miss
his loving and big personality dearly.
Besides his parents Neil was predeceased by his brother
Trent, his mother and father- in- law Julia and James Roberts,
brothers- in- law Percy Roberts, Bob Bland and sisters-in- law Hilda
Bland and Maxine Feltmate, niece Kayla Feltmate and nephew Kirk Bent.
So many loving faces to greet him and show him
around.
The family would like to thank the staff at the Cape Breton
Regional Hospital floor 4A who took exceptional care of Neil. A
special thank you to his Nurse Dawn, Dr Hewlette and Claire and all
the staff and nurses at the Renal Clinic.
Memorial Donations can be made to the Kidney foundation of
Canada. Cremation has taken place. The family will be
hosting a celebration of life for Neil when covid restrictions are
lifted. Arrangements are under the care of Dennis Haverstock
Funeral Home, Port Hawkesbury. Words of comfort maybe
