POTASH, Morley (Mendel) – On June 18, 2021, Morley Potash passed away peacefully at home, with his wife, children and grandchildren by his side.
He was a husband, our father, our Zaidy, our hero.
Morley, 89 years old, overcame significant adversity in his childhood, but prevailed time and again to beat the odds and live a life full of love and family.
Born in the small town of Szczurowice, Poland in 1932, to Lazer and Pina Potash Z’l, Morley survived the Holocaust through bravery, intelligence, intuition and luck. He survived multiple round-ups and the liquidation of the Brody Ghetto. Much of his survival came by hiding in a forest. After liberation, he came to Canada in 1948 as a displaced person and settled in Winnipeg. Upon arrival, at the age of 16, he had to forgo his education to become the main provider for his mother, brother Martin and Uncle Jack.
In 1957, he moved east to the big city of Toronto, where he settled and eventually raised his family. He began work at Sony of Canada, where he rose from a position in the warehouse to National Sales Manager, with regular trips to Japan that fulfilled a curiosity of exploring a whole new part of the world. It was at Sony, where he met the love of his life, Liz. Together, side by side, for the next 62 years, they built a beautiful life together. She was his rock, his confidant, his motivation, his everything.
A man of few words, Morley enjoyed the simple things in life, a good meal, a sunny day on his front porch, or sitting on the deck at the cottage with a crackling radio in his lap listening to the Blue Jays game as he dozed off. He was a master latke maker, and made the world’s best matzah brie. After retirement he relished his time away from the cold Toronto winters in sunny Clearwater Beach, Florida. Until the very end he enjoyed following the stock market by day and watching sports at night. His greatest pride and joy was his family. His face lit up the room at the sight of a loved one.
Morley is survived by his dedicated, loving wife Liz, his three children, Lorne (Sherrie), Tobi (Stuart) and Randy, and his five adoring grandchildren Addie, Jonah, Ethan, Brielle and Caia. He will be greatly missed by his cousins and extended relatives Harvey Halperin and family, Carole Derkson and family, the Potash families of Winnipeg, Amit Neufeld and his family in Israel. Morley was the patriarch of our family and a true inspiration.
If desired, donations can be made to the Friends of Simon Wiesenthal Center for Holocaust Studies bit.ly/3q9Vj8D. May his memory be a blessing.
