MACNEIL, Mitchell “Mitch” Dale – Age 29, Great Village, passed away suddenly as a result of a car accident on July 10th, 2021. Born in Halifax on March 17, 1992 to his loving parents, Valerie Meredith (Highland Village) and Dale MacNeil (Great Village).
Mitch is survived by his sister, Valene (Jordan), Truro and numerous uncles, aunts, cousins, two nephews and his beloved dog, Otto. Mitch was predeceased by his grandparents, Tom and Valerie Meredith and John and Betty MacNeil and his uncle, Tom Meredith.
Mitch grew up beside his Granny and Grandad’s farm where his love for the outdoors and farming grew from the time he was a little boy. He loved to be involved in any activity that was taking place on the farm, especially if it involved a tractor. Mitch spent a vast amount of time farming with his Uncle Tom. Regardless of the season, you could find him at Tom’s side. In recent times, Mitch could be found at his Mum’s side in the barn. Whether giving a bottle to lambs, forking out hay, or shoveling manure, Mitch was there. His love for her farm animals was extremely apparent in the care that he gave them.
Mitch also had a love for cars and mechanics which was fostered by the numerous hours spent with his Dad in the garage. Mitch became a very talented mechanic who carried his knowledge with him and used it time and again to repair and restore vehicles and equipment for those that needed his help. In years gone by, Mitch was also the proud owner of a Dodge Dart and traveled outside of the province with his Dad and sister to compete in drag races.
Mitch was a wonderful brother to his sister, Valene. He always had her back and made it clear to everyone that they didn’t mess with his little sister. Mitch was also a great uncle to his nephews, Jordy and Ollie. Whether playing blocks with Jordy, completing puzzles or going on a hunt for “bumble bee” ice cream, his smile when with these little boys said it all.
Mitch never put himself first and he continuously strived to look after the ones he cared about. If you asked, Mitch would be there. It didn’t matter what the task was. From replacing a garage roof to landscaping for his family to helping with daily chores or just changing an oil filter, Mitch was always there when his family and friends needed him and was always willing and ready to dive in and get dirty with any project. Even if things didn’t go quite as he thought they should, Mitch would simply shake his head, speak a few (or several) unprintable words and find a way to get the job done.
Mitch loved spending time with all of his family members. He spent many enjoyable hours with his cousins as a child playing board games, tobogganing and just digging in the dirt. He enjoyed exchanging stories and laughs with all his uncles and Mitch’s love for the outdoors led to a very special bond with his Uncle Stan. You could often find them hunting, clearing brush, burning grass or tackling whatever task came their way together. Nothing made Mitch happier than spending time with Uncle Stan.
Along with farming, Mitch’s love for the outdoors led him to careers in surveying as well as lawn and landscaping. Mitch’s sense of adventure took him from the Nova Scotia shores to the mountainous Rockies. During Mitch’s time as a surveyor out West you could always count on a new wildlife tale or picture whenever you messaged him. Whether it be a story of a grizzly that was too close for comfort, a fearless cougar that would not back down or time spent sharing sandwiches with a fox, there was always a story to be told.
Mitch had numerous friends and close connections at home and no matter where he was, Mitch always knew what was happening at home. Quite often before the ones at home even did and was always prepared to drop what he was doing, hop a plane and come home if needed. In recent years, Mitch had been home in Nova Scotia with his family and friends and where his heart truly belonged.
Mitch was an extremely loving and caring son, grandson, brother, nephew, uncle and true friend to so many. His love for his Granny and Grandad always shined through along with his love and devotion to his Uncle Tom. Mitch never let the world forget who Uncle Tom was. Mitch was a man with amazing courage and determination and a man who was always true to his word.
The family would like to express their sincere gratitude and appreciation to the endless number of people that have reached out and shared stories and offered words of support.
Cremation has taken place and as per Mitch’s wishes, there will be no service. Donations in Mitchell’s memory may be made to a wildlife or children’s charity of choice. Mitch, as you kick back with Granny and Grandad and Uncle Tom, may you know how much you were loved and will be missed. A day will never go by when you will not be thought of and remembered for the incredible man you were. Your smile will live in the hearts of many and your strength and determination will be the inspiration for us all.
