Michael died unexpectedly at his Mount Albert home on June 3rd, 2021 although he had not been doing well in the weeks before his death. He was 74.
On his face, the expression of someone who was surprised by heaven, or perhaps joy. The stress that had been there was gone, his eyes were open and clear. Perhaps it was a good death in that respect, although the weeks of stress and suffering that preceded it were anything but.
He leaves behind his partner of 23 years, Patricia Michael, sons, Angus (Rinat) and Adam (Melissa) as well as his former wife Helen Young. He also leaves his grandchildren Myziah, Myla, Adelaide, Mirabel and Persephone; stepdaughter Ariel (Matthew) Teeuwen and their children Isabella and Broderick.
He was the eldest brother of Robert and Penelope Young (Terry Nilles) and the son of the late June (nee Henley) and Fredrick Young.
Michael was born in Kingsbury England on October 27 in the year of the Firedog, 1946. He was educated in England and various primary and secondary schools in Montreal, Deep River and Peterborough ON before arriving at the University of Toronto.
Michael was a complex Renaissance man of many interests and passions. The strains of blues guitar often wafted through the house in the evening. His love of animals and the stories of his encounters with them were legendary. He raced cars at Mossport and knocked about in various endeavours before he became one of the early 70s recipients of government funded computer training in mainframe and micro-processing. Michael had found his niche; his creativity, innate attention to detail and superlative mathematical skills were uniquely suited to this emerging field. He continued in the IT field until his death, working for Honeywell in the early years and eventually finding his way to StreetPerfect (now owned by Postmedia), where he was the creative genius behind its evolution and ongoing implementation along with partner Ken Kantorowitz. This addressing software is now used across the country by government and corporations alike.
When Michael’s marriage ended in 1998, he met Patty and together they lived in Toronto’s Riverside community before escaping to the country two years ago. Michael had many dreams of renovating their Mount Albert century home and had implemented some of them before his passing.
Funeral service is at his home June 8, followed by interment at Mount Albert cemetery.
If desired, memorial donations may be made to the Daily Bread Foodbank or any charity serving the homeless and hungry, for whom Michael had endless compassion.
