Michael’s Obituary
It is with great sadness and heavy hearts that the family of the late Michael James Downey announce his peaceful passing at the Dr. Charles L. LeGrow Health Centre in Port aux Basques on Friday, February 5th, 2021 at the age of 84 years. Born in O’Regan’s, NL, Michael was the son of the late John and Maude Downey (nee Smith). He was also predeceased by his father and mother-in-law; William and Beatrice Anderson (nee Billard), infant granddaughter; Stacey Downey, brothers; Edward Downey, Frank (Annie) Downey, Raymond (Ida) Downey, George (Marie) Downey, Leo Downey, Augustus Downey, Thomas Downey, sisters; Rose (Carl) Brake, Theresa (Randolph) Prosser, brother-in-law; Bernard O’Gorman, sisters-in-law; Rebecca (James) Sheaves, Mildred (George) Burridge, and Nina (Clarence) Skeard.
Michael leaves to mourn with many fond and precious memories his loving wife of 61 years Ruth Downey (nee Anderson), son; Michael (Diane) Downey of O’Regan’s, NL, James (Goretti) Downey of Halifax, NS, Cecil (Racheal) Downey of Yarmouth, NS, daughters; Wanda (Roger) Chaisson of Sackville, NS, Sylvia (Rick) Dennis of Dartmouth, NS, Darlene (Dennis) Downey of South Branch, NL, Arlene Squires of Fort McMurray, AB, grandchildren; Jeffrey, Darren, Carlene, Terrilynn, Arthur, Tiffany, Travis, Derick, Shawn Lee, Angie, Jamie, Adrian, Erica, Vince, Dustin, Dylan, and Jay plus twenty five great-grandchildren.
Michael also leaves behind his brother; Hycianth (Mary) Downey of Dryden, ON, sister; Margaret O’Gorman of Stephenville, NL, sisters-in-law; Blanche Downey of Millville, NL, Winifred Downey of Codroy, NL, and brother-in-law; Cecil (Florence) Anderson of Pasadena, NL plus a large circle of nieces, nephews, extended family and friends.
Micheal will be sadly missed by his friends and residents of the Dr. Charles L. LeGrow Long Term Care Facility. A special thank you to the staff for the wonderful care, compassion and support given to Michael in his seventeen month stay. A special thank you to his two caregivers prior to being a resident of Long Term Care; Marilyn Colbourne and Carol Ann Reid. Your kindness will never be forgotten.
Visitation will take place on Sunday, February 7th from 2-4 and 7-9 pm at East Haven Funeral Home in Port aux Basques. The Mass of Christian Burial will take place at St. Ann’s Roman Catholic Church in Upper Ferry on Monday, February 8th, at 11am officiated by Father Andrew White. Interment to follow at Mount St. Thomas Cemetery, Great Codroy. Flowers graciously accepted or donations in Michael’s memory can be made to the Dr. Charles L. LeGrow Health Centre Long Term Care Facility.
