Obituary of Merton Robert Bentley
BENTLEY, Merton – (January 2nd, 1928-September 23rd, 2021), after a battle for many years with his health, Merton Robert (Mert) Bentley passed peacefully with his wife and their family by his side. Predeceased by his parents, Merton & Ellen Bentley, his sister, Marie (Gordon), and his brother, Gerald. Mert married Ruth (nee Lloyd) on October 15th, 1949 and they started their family in Milford, Ontario. Mert loved his time spent with his wife Ruth, his children, Margaret (predeceased), Elmer (Pat), Mary McLean (Marty-predeceased), Kathryn (Katie) & David. Mert was a proud grandfather to 15 grandchildren (predeceased by Matthew and Erin) and a proud great-gramps to 21. He will be missed by his many nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, in-laws, extended family, and many friends. Mert was an avid mechanic, starting his career at Minaker’s Auto Parts in Milford, Ontario. He then moved on to General Motors in Oshawa, Ontario. He found it very difficult to be away from his family and friends, so he chose to come back to the area to fulfill his career at Sharpe Motors in Picton, Ontario. Upon purchasing their dream waterfront property in South Bay, Mert and Ruth moved from Milford and the next chapter of their life began. Christmas, family gatherings, friend gatherings, all became their way of life. Mert was active in the Elk’s Lodge in Picton, where he was Exulted Ruler for a period of time and also a life-long Honourable member. He was active in the Picton Curling Club, where he curled in the Elk’s National Seniors in Saskatchewan, bringing home the championship in 1991. Mert was active in establishing the South Bay Boating Club with fellow friends (just celebrated their 45th year). The group, and Mert’s son Elmer, having boats, toured many a waterway, for many years and spent a lot of time in the Thousand Islands. He had the time of his life. We will miss him! He is truly at peace. “Love you, husband and daddy”. Mert’s family will be holding a Celebration of Life at a later date.
