Dad was born in Tweed Ontario on a kitchen table May 25, 1927. The family moved to Belleville when Dad was one. He attended Queen Alexander School and graduated BCIVS.
Aspirations of becoming a pharmacist was short lived as the construction industry caught his attention. He began working for McFarland’s Construction and in May of 1955 he started Rollins Construction followed by the opening of Rollins Lumber. In the late 1970’s a niche in the motel industry prompted the beginning of the Journey End Motel chain. During Dad’s lifetime he had many other successful business ventures including the construction and operation of retirement homes.
Dad was known for his many philanthropic endeavours such as The United Way of Quinte, The Enrichment Centre for Mental Health and The Belleville General Hospital Foundation.
Throughout his lifetime he received awards from Good Citizenship (Ontario), Canada Award for Business Excellence, the Ontario Business Achievement Award, Quinte Home Builders (Founder), Lifetime Achievement Award Belleville Chamber of Commerce. Dad was also a lifetime member of the Wharf Street Debating Club and most recently received the Certificate of Achievement from the City of Belleville for his Life Long Dedication and Commitment to the City of Belleville.
Dad was quite an athlete, playing many sports, including baseball, hockey, racket sports and was especially adept at hustling pool at Lafferty’s Pool Hall. He sponsored many sports teams in the Quinte area.
The family extends thanks and deep gratitude to Dr.’s Hollet, Davies, and the medical practitioners at Quinte Health Care. Special thanks to personal care provider Eunice Beck for her love and dedication to our father.
