Obituary of Maura Smith-Weseloh
Maura Ruth Smith-Weseloh
With deep sadness, the family of Maura Smith-Weseloh, announce her passing on April 14, 2021, in her 74th year of life, in Georgetown, Ontario.
It is difficult to put into words the lasting impact Maura had on everyone she encountered throughout her life. Maura was a mother, grandmother, teacher, administrator, confidant, support system, guidance counsellor, spiritual advisor. She was regularly one to provide comedic relief while supplying constant “food for thought”. Maura guided many individuals through difficult situations.
Maura was a loving mother to daughters Katherine (David) and Elizabeth. She will be greatly missed by her grandchildren Frances, Haydon and Victoria. Sister to Brenda (2018) and Martha. Maura will be missed by her nieces and nephew, and by their children.
She will also be missed by her close friends Ted and Linda.
Maura was predeceased by parents Haydon and Sheila (nee Breen).
Maura was born and raised in Toronto, Ontario, to Haydon, from Toronto, and Sheila, of St. John’s, Newfoundland. In her youth, Maura attended school in North York and worked as a youth counsellor. She was admitted to Brock University, where she met her previous spouse, Robert Weseloh, of Waterloo, Ontario. Maura attended Teacher’s College at Toronto Teachers College and taught at North York Public Schools including McNicholl Public School for 10 years. She left teaching to raise her daughters but would return to teaching with the Dufferin-Peel Catholic District School Board in the 1980’s.
Maura obtained her Masters of Religious Education at St. Michael’s College and completed all of the necessary additional qualifications to become an administrator. She achieved all of this while continuing to raise her two daughters.
Maura was appointed to the position of Principal of St. Monica Elementary School after working as a Vice Principal at a number of schools in Mississauga and Brampton. The love Maura had for teaching and children was evident to all who encountered her and she thrived at St. Monica, both personally and professionally.
Maura retired from education in 2011 to spend time enjoying her grandchildren.
Due to Covid-19 restrictions, a private funeral service will be held at the Jones Funeral Home, Georgetown, followed by interment at Mount Pleasant Cemetery, Toronto.
Maura’s family sends sincere thanks to all for their sympathy and condolences.
