After a determined fight, Mary crossed the rainbow bridge on January 8, 2021.
Mary was born in Winnipeg in 1957. She was the youngest in a family of four and the only girl. Mary was quiet and thoughtful, precocious and bright. By the time she had reached high school age, the family had settled in Stony Mountain. Mary graduated from Stonewall Collegiate in 1975 and then moved to Winnipeg and worked for Moore Business Forms for many years before returning to school to learn computer programming in the late ’90s. Mary worked as a programmer with Doncar Systems until her retirement in the summer of 2020.
In her early years Mary had a wide variety of interests from making her own clothes, healthy eating to collecting treasures and free-lancing her art to science fiction magazines. She travelled all over the world to Science Fiction Conventions. In later years, her insatiable thirst for knowledge of all things Universe became an endearing quest to investigate unusual facts or phenomena. Mary was a meticulous quilter and produced beautiful work that is admired by many. Her true passion was for her cottage where she would spend time gardening or trying out new recipes. Rainy days were devoted to reading while on sunny days she might go picking blueberries or floating around on the old inner tube. All who knew Mary will remember evenings of fun and laughter be it card games, a singsong around the campfire or bantering well into the night over the day’s events.
She will be sadly missed by her brother Monty (Kathy); sisters-in-law Misty and Sheila; nephews, Darwin (Karla), Russell (Ann), Albert (Jessica), Stephen (Jennifer), and niece Crystal (Cameron); step-nephews, Ivan (Danielle) and Adam (Emma); her life-long friend Kathy Langille and Kathy’s family, Matthew (Jocelyne), William (Aleeya), Mirela (Treva), Daniel, and Nay (Gui), in which she was affectionately known as “Auntie Richie”. She will also be missed by her friend, Al Johnson. Mary was predeceased by her parents, Peter and Winnie, and brothers Patrick and Rory.
Family and friends would like to thank the exceptional care Mary received from the Palliative Home Care unit as well as the wonderful staff of 3 East, Riverview. As Dr. Ted so aptly remarked, she did it her way!
Due to COVID restrictions a service will be held at a later date. Donations in Mary’s memory can be made to a charity of your choice.
