Mary Kelly
May 17, 1932 – December 10, 2021
Passed away peacefully at St. Luke’s Nursing Home on December 10, 2021, surrounded by loved ones, Mary T. Kelly (nee Doody). Born in Duricle, Placentia Bay she was the youngest daughter of the late Patrick Doody and Josephine (Kennedy). Mary was predeceased by her husband Joseph Kelly, infant son Patrick, sisters Genevieve, Alice, Bridget, Madonna, and brother Richard.
Leaving to mourn are one sister Adele Cheeseman of St. John’s. Also left to mourn eight children Diane Eustace (Carl), Debbie Noonan (Greg), Joan Lind, Jackie Gosse (Derrick), Janet Kelly, Mary Davis (Jeff), Joseph Kelly (Emily) and Michelle Kelly, and sister-in-laws Margaret Hann & Lucy Stacey. Also left behind with happy memories are her grandchildren, Jayde & Jeremy; Melissa, Michael & Erica; Cody & Kelsea; Danielle & Adam; Tyler & Jenna; Matthew & Erin and James, and great- grandchildren Brianna, Addison, Chelsea, and Clark.
In addition to her busy family life, Mary was a practicing RN who graduated from the General Hospital School of Nursing in 1953. She started her career at the Burin Cottage Hospital and later at the Cottage Hospital in Stephenville Crossing.
Mary’s life was a demonstration of the Newfoundland spirit of remarkable courage and resiliency. Her husband Joseph died leaving her to support and raise eight children. She continued her nursing career at the Sir Thomas Roddick Hospital in Stephenville until she retired in 1992. Mary had a loyal circle of friends from the nursing class of 1953, who met regularly for reunions and social outings for over 60 years .She was an avid bridge player and gardener and loved the Newfoundland outdoors.
A special thanks to her nursing caregivers on Pleasantview Unit St. Luke’s who continued to shower her with affection while in palliative care, and the caring staff of Fairhaven where she briefly stayed. The palliative care team in Cabot Square were exceptional in their delivery of end of life care. And high praises for the professionalism of Nurse Practitioner Mary Beresford who went the extra mile to make sure we understood the various interventions being used on our Mom.
