Obituary for Mary Anne Maloney
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Mary (Anne) Maloney at the Juravinski Hospital on Wednesday November 24, 2021 after a long and courageous battle with cancer.
Anne was a wonderful wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. Anne was born and raised in Guelph Ontario. She was extremely close with her mother Grace Kaiser and her four sisters Pat Chalmers, Lorraine Moss, Shirley Kaiser-Fyfe and Lynda Reid. She will be sadly missed by her two surviving sisters Lynda and Shirley, and her many nieces and nephews with whom she was very close.
In 1958 Anne married Jim Maloney and moved with him to Dundas where they settled and raised three daughters (Linda, Kathy and Patti (Doug Drochner). She loved her daughters very much and was a constant source of love and support for them. Anne had a special place in her heart for her son-in-law Doug.
Anne worked for 23 years in the Tax Department with the Town of Dundas before retiring at age 57. Anne really enjoyed her time at the Town and loved the opportunity it provided her to meet new people and be “in the know” about the goings on around Town. Anne had a genuine ‘realness’ about her that drew people to her and made her easy to connect with.
After retiring, Anne’s passion was walking and she spent hours walking and exploring the neighborhoods around Dundas and West Hamilton. Every morning it was her routine to walk about 5,km ending up at Fortino’s Café where she would enjoy her favorite green tea and a muffin while chatting with strangers or catching up with old friends. This connection with nature and people fed her soul. She also had a lot of fun with her friends at her weekly bowling league in Waterdown.
Anne had amazing neighbors on Brock Street where she lived for over 60 years. Through the years many became like family to her. When she became too ill for her long walks, she enjoyed sitting on her front porch and keeping an eye on the neighborhood. She especially enjoyed the visits with her sisters, nieces, friends and family and neighborhood kids who would often stop by for a chat and a special sweet treat from Anne.
Anne loved children and there was no greater joy in her life than her grandchildren and later her great-grandchildren. She will be very sadly missed by Elissa, Rachel and Nicole, Michelle, Steven, Vanessa, Justin, Steve, Brett and Sarah.
“Grams” (as most of them called her) was the kind of grandparent every child deserves. She was always there for them no matter what and would drop anything to babysit, pick them up from school, take them to an appointment or to just have fun with them whenever they were together. She had a generous heart and would give anyone the shirt off her back if they needed it. Her grandchildren adored her keen mind, sharp wit and open heart. Anne had such a playful spirit and down-to-earth nature. When her grandkids came to visit, nothing else mattered. Whatever the game was, she would make it fun and I often heard them say that ‘Grams’ made the ‘best grilled cheese’ ever.
Anne’s love for family grew stronger when the great-grandchildren came along. Visits from Emerald and Orie or Colin, Hunter and Brantley was the highlight of her life and nourished her soul. There was nothing she loved more than to see the little ones and spend time with them. Right up to the last days of her life, she managed to find the energy to teach Emerald to play cribbage or just hang out and enjoy their company. Things often turned ‘silly’ and the kids loved this about GG.
Anne will be very sadly missed by her family, and those who were lucky to have known her and spend time with her. She will be remembered with much admiration as a beautiful, generous, loving, kind, funny, sweet lady.
